this is probably a stupid question, but how much changes between rom sets? I got my set from the freemameroms project, but it's a .82 set (shoulda checked before i got it apparently)... is there a lot that has changed since then?
-
Well, some things. A lot not. If the games you want to play are running okay, then you're doing okay.
Sometimes games can be redumped, and that signifies a redownload of a set you might already have. Or they change the name of either the set or the ROMs within. In this case, use ClrMAME to audit and make those changes.

Yup. Learn to use ClrMamePro (http://www.clrmame.com/) proficiently, and you will do yourself (and us!) a huge favor. If you knew how to use ClrMamePro (http://www.clrmame.com/), you'd be able to tell all by yourself, within minutes, exactly which ROMs have been updated or changed between ANY two versions of MAME.
Aside from that, anywhere from 15-50+ ROMs can change between versions. Now, whether they're changes worth worrying about or even changes to games you'd play is, for most people, the deciding factor on whether to update or not.
As Peale said, there's no reason to upgrade/update either MAME or your ROMs if you're perfectly happy with what you've already got.

I'm still back at 0.58 8)
Runs what I want it to. if I find something I need later, I'll update. Until then, I'll chill.

I downloaded clrmamepro last night and ran it against my romset; i'm missing something like 200 rom sets, so I'm probably just gonna get a .87 set and be done with it - i have noticed that there are several games that aren't running well/correctly that I would like to play, so I might as well update. Thanks for the info, all
