Title: Can you identify this component?
Post by: Apollo on October 11, 2004, 01:23:59 am
Ok so my new cab has what looks like a blown component, it should be fairly easy to replace but can you identify it for me?

It is white and seems to be ceramic, it is approx 20mm tall and 8mm square. On one side it has the symbols

3W 330ohms J

I'm assuming it's a big assed resistor, it has a lot of brown crud on the side so I guess this is the fault with the monitor board.
Any advice?

Yes indeed it is a resistor, a ceramic resister actually, they carry a lot more power than the standard small round ones.

Only problem is, something else probably caused it to blow.

Just get another 330ohm 3 watt resister and give it a go.

Yeah I was wondering why it would blow and kinda thought there might be another problem. I'll give it a whirl, cheers.

look for obvious shorts and other damaged components first. normally its not the best idea to replace components without knowing why it died in the first place. although normally its not recommended because the component is expensive. in this case itll cost you bugger all!! maybe a buck fifty tops and you can get ceramic resistors at any ol electronics shop...
