Title: Arcade Stick for Xbox
Post by: Maradona10 on October 09, 2004, 02:29:00 pm
Hi,

I've got an Xbox for 3 years now and I'm having troubles with the following:
5 years ago I got an accident with diving and I'm paralyzed now. I can't use my fingers like I used to.
To do some time I have bought myself an Xbox, because I was not a fan of Playstation.
But I soon came up with problems playing the games. Because I can't handle with a normal controller I've bought an arcade stick.
I've tried several including the Gamester Arcade Stick (http://www.gamesterusa.com/xboxreflex.html) and now I have the Logic 3 Arcade Stick (http://www.spectravideo.com/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=133&category_id=).
The Logic plays very well, but unfortunately there's no right thumbstick that I can use. I can only switch to either the L-stick and the R-stick.
And because of most of the games need the right stick (camera, aiming) I can't play the best games available.
It's been frustrating me for more than 3 years now that there's no controller build for disabled people like me.
The only thing that has to be different on the Logic 3 A.S.  is that it needs a right thumbstick on it.
I know they are normally used for 'arcade games' but this is my only way to enjoy Xbox world :-).
I think this can be built, but I don't know how. So that's why I try this forum. Is there a way to fix or built something like that? Any tips are welcome.
I've searched all over the internet without finding a decent sollution. I'm willing to pay a price of your thoughts.
So I hope somebody can help me with this please because this is my last hope.

Greetings Alex.

try asking justplaingaming.com or modeverything.com.  they both build custom sticks.

Thanks. That could be the page I'm looking for.
But I also only see controllers without the right-stick.
Why would that be?

I've been there a few months ago. But it also has just one stick, and not the right-thumbstick.

I've also seen a topic on this page: http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=3331

I wonder if he found a sollution. I've e-mailed him. But maybe someone else knows more?

If you give us some sort of idea of exactly the way you want it we can build it or atleast tell you a plan of modding one to your liking.  Basically what we need is...

1. what type of joysticks you need (Short like controller sticks or can you use arcade style?)

2. How many buttons do you want and what size?

3. Does it have to be compatable with XBOX or do you want it to work with other systems as well?

4. If the second option in question three would you be willing to have more then one controller for easier building process?

Once I have that I will tear into my old potato controller and start modding for ya. I am getting good with Fiberglass maybe I can just make a worth while controller for ya.

P.S. It might not be the best looking thing in the world but it should be usable.

P.S.S oh and exactly (please take no offense) how do your hands function are they both fully functional or do you ahve a hard toime with certain things. This helps with joystick placement.(again please take no offense)

1. The left has to be a arcade stick. But can it also be built with click function? Maybe this is possible with seperate buttons?
And are the movements with the arcade stick the same as the normal xbox controller? I mean can I strafe with it? And for the right-stick: It can be a shorter one, or maybe like the normal right-thumbstick but 3 cm higher.

2. I want all the buttons like the xbox controller (x,a,b,y,white button, black button, left trigger, right trigger, start, back) The sizes neet to be the same like on my arcade stick now. I will measure the sizes later on.
But they have to be a bit bigger then these: http://justplaingaming.com/index.htm And they have to be analog.

3. It has only to be compatible with Xbox.

Let me know what you think or if you have to know more just ask it.
I will post later on, because I'm going away now. Thanmks for helping me.

Greetz Alex.

I have a spinal cord injury at C4/C5. Don't know if it means anything.
My hands don't function normally but now I have the Logic 3 arcade stick and with that I can play very well. My hands have good strength but my fingers work very slow. I can use a normal controller and I can handle the normal thumbsticks, but then I have the problem that I can't use the triggers because my fingers are too stiff.
I'll try to make a picture of a arcade stick how I think it will be good for me to handle.

Just a thought, now I have this one: http://www.spectravideo.com/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=133&category_id= (http://www.spectravideo.com/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=133&category_id=) Maybe it's an option that I bye a 2nd which you can use for making a new one? It costs only 18 pounds, and then you don't need to bye expensive stuff for it. Only thing is the right thumbstick. Your thoughts?

this is the first fully featured, true analog, arcade panel that i have seen.  however, i havent really seen them first hand, and imagine it to be quite expensive..

Thanks, but it's only a 2p version. And they also say there that the sticks are very stiff and that the lay-out is screwed up. But the idea is great though. Something like that I need. So I hope Soulcon or someone can built it for me.

@Soulcon: The width of my arcade stick now is 30cm and the buttons are 3cm each

Just to keep hopes alive Me and Maradona have been conversing via e-mail. I have been busy at work and have a couple of ideas. All the way from Side palm buttons, to tounge activated switchs ;). I am sure we will figure something out that will be feasable and comfortable. I just can't believe not more people have tried to make one of these for someone. No offense towards the forums ofcourse. Its in general towards media creators! Dang buggers!

Hi Soulcom,

What do you mean with:'Side palm buttons'?

I was also thinking of a programmable controller where you can program the triggers under another button.

Basically imagine using your palms as a button depressor. You utilize a shelf which means your palms rest on something. If it be the side of the controller or the top most part I can install some buttons or reorient them so that all you would have to do is lift your hand a little, or press to activate the buttons. That way you never have to really stretch your hands to actually reach a trigger button.  I think this is probably the best in my thought bank at the moment.  what do you think?

Maybe you could make a picture of what you mean so I can see what you really mean. i think something like that could be a solution. I think you mean to hold just a normal controller with 2 single buttons just for the triggers. Am I right?

I've also spent a couple of hours searching a good programmable controller, but with all of them you can't re-map the triggers.

I will do my best to try and post pics but currently my home computer has caught a case of the blowing ups. It has been dropping parts and errors for about a week and it finally bought the big one. So now I have to see what I can't do to get it working again to post pics. I have taken apart one of my potato size controllers and have some ideas. We will see what we can't get done. So far I think my idea is going to work even if I can't describe it properly I will get something set up.

I believe both MAS and XArcade left you toggle through the sticks (left or right) to use whichever you want with the 1 joystick.

Thanks for your help, but I already have a arcade stick which I can switch.
But I don't need to switch. I must have them both on arcade stick because I need to play with both sticks at the same time.

as far as i know, there hasnt been a documented case of someone successfully integrating analog arcade sticks with a console pad hack.  i want if yall managed to do it yet.

Currently I am just working with the original potato controller at the moment. Then if tha works out I was going to work on implementing what I find with the controller into a possible dual analog aracde stick. We will see but so far I am just sticking with the controller modes at the moment.
