I'm a noob here and still researching control panels, cabinet designs, etc... before starting my own cabinet project. My background is in metalwork instead of woodwork and my Dad owns a welding shop so I'm thinking of a metal frame and sheetmetal or aluminum panelled showcase cab similar to the new ThornCab Plans posted by Thorn (sorry for the rip-off).
I'm thinking of configuring the a 2 player CP with and 6 buttons and 2 joysticks per player (the main joystick an 8way optical rotary , and the second 8way for smashTV,etc...). Plus a trackball and possibly another 4way joy for games that act up with the 8 ways. Of course all this would be run thru a i-pac and opti-pac.
My question has to do with the how the CP is configured for those of you that have 2 joysticks for games like robotron, smashTV, etc... Is the second joy wired to buttons 1,2,3,4 for the respective fire directions or if you've gone a different route how did you do it.

what kind of interface are you planning to use ??
and also is... are you planning on having 3rd and 4th player ?? sticks on the side or something ??
I think those things will affect your decisions....
basically.... if you're using Mame, you can do whatever you want since you can easily remap buttons....
I personally think that if you wire it separate, it'll be more flexible in the long run....
(like... if you wire the buttons and the second joystick together... when you're playing, if you or someone else "accidently" moved the other joystick... its like you pressed a button... that can be "deadly" at times... ;) ;) )
anyway.... just personal opinions... heee hee....
;D ;D ;D

Prolly run xmame on debian. Planning on running CP for only 2 players (not 4)
Was planning on running I-pac (not ipac4). Wiring the 2nd joy seperately from buttons 1-4 runs me out of interfaces on the ipac.
What about those of you that have this type setup? How did you do it?

Well, the IPAC allows for 8 buttons per player so you may have 4 extra inputs there if you're only using 6 buttons each.
What about running wires to 4 of your buttons AND one of the joysticks for each player since you wouldn't be using them at the same time. It should work fine. You can map the few games that use two joysticks easily then.
