Title: Happ Super - to Recess or not to Recess?
Post by: DanteBK on October 03, 2004, 12:09:18 pm
I tried using the message board search but it doesn't seem to be working -- so my question: When mounting a Happ Super joystick from beneath the control panel, should I recess or not? Advantages? Disadvantages?

Mostly I want to hear from people who have not recessed: have you been happy with it? Unhappy?

Thanks in advance!

How thick is the wood of your CP?  You could always go with like 5/8" instead of 3/4", and that would buy you an additional 1/8" right there.

My first cabinet had non-recessed Supers in  a 3/4" control panel, and while they were a little short, I thought they felt fine.  I think you might be happier if you recessed them though...

Yes - recess for sure.

well I have 3/4 in control panel and I went to mount them this weekend and I can't even see how you could NOT recess it with 3/4 in CP.  If I follow the instructions that came with the joystick, then I literally have like 1 inch of the joystick protruding through the top of the CP!  I'd have to leave out some parts to be able to mount it without recessing  :)

But what sucks is I'm following the project arcade book for assembly and I have some blocks that I attached to velcro my CP top down and those blocks are prohibitting me from using the router to recess the joystick.  And I've already glued those blocks down so I don't know how I can get them out without tearing up my CP.   >:(

if your cp is mdf, you can get in there with a chisel around the border of your recess.  then you can kind of dig out the recess layer by layer.

I just realized yesterday that I have the same problem. I testfit mine without recessing and don't think it's that bad so I'm gonna go ahead and not recess. I don't think a 1/4" here or there is really that much anyway.

Mine are not recessed.  They are on a 5/8" CP with 1/8" of Lexan on top for 3/4" total, and for me they're fine.
