Title: Suggested screw/bit size for Lexan attachment
Post by: John IV [MameUI64] on September 10, 2002, 05:33:40 pm
I've got my Lexan all nicely cut and ready to attach to the CP however I'm curious what are some suggested bit/screw sizes that folks are using.  The .093 lexan is going onto 3/4" wood.  1/8" diameter work ok? Thanks -

hey john iv,

I hope u are taking a lot of pictures to document your progress...

FWIW to secure the happs joysticks traditionally you use 3/16" carriage bolts (of course home depot only sells 1/4" - but Ace's Hardware sells the 3/16'" ones thank god)

So... for asthetic purposes you could go with carriage bolts in the 4 corners if that's what you want...

FWIW (I'm acronym happy today... WTF?! is up with that?) It's my understanding that just the buttons and the joystick carriage bolts should be enough to sandwich any cover art/secure the lexan panel...

Hope that helps...

Ah, thanks for the note on the carriage bolts, I got the Happ controls today and noticed that my 1/4" bolts aint happening.

I am taking pix. :)

That's interesting about not needing the corners held down for the Lexan, that makes sense w/ all those buttons and joysticks holding things tight.. probably easier on the hand too so you don't hook it on the lower edges when playing.

I painted the front and sides black, and have sent off 3 designs to Kinkos for the overlay to pick up later.

for drilling the holes for bolts, gotta use 1/4 drill bits.and  7/32 bolts is perfect if you can find..other wise use whatever you can find locally...

ace hardware has bolts different sizes...

good luck and post pic when you done. ;)

I would think you'd at least want 4 screws/bolts to hold down the corners from getting pulled up by body movement or something.  Couldn't you just use some #8 wood screws with finishing washers?  I've seen this a lot on cabs at the local convenience store.

Yep, I went w/ Snaaake's suggestion in another thread of the #6 3/4" screws into 3/32 bit pilot holes.
