Title: RAM/memory question
Post by: johnnysmitch on October 01, 2004, 10:17:23 am
I recall reading on here something about ram getting bogged down after playing multiple games in mame, and some kind of setting that clears your memory every time you close a game, instead of every time you reboot (or at least something along those lines) - as you can tell, I can barely word it well here, so searching the boards for my answer has been pretty unfruitful - anyone know what i'm talking about/how to do it?

why...?  are you having a problem. I have not run into this... but all my mame machines are XP  and as far as I can tell XP clears the memory.
I did have problems with windows ME but it was not just Mame. heck just sitting there memory would run out in Windows ME

yeah, my games seem to be running a bit slower as i play more during a session - maybe its partly because i'm running mame32 right now?

That's known as a "memory leak".  Do a search for "RAM recovery" programs and I'm sure you'll come up with a host of applications that will auto-scan and recover RAM when it passes a certain percentage in use.

Have you tracked your RAM usage on the system?  That would be a tell-tale sign if there is a memory leak involved.

I'm using XP Pro.  Also, to give some more info, my system is an Athlon 2000+ w/512 megs 400mhz ram (temporarily borrowed from my main system).  I'll look into that memory leak thing, thanks!

Perhaps this will help?

http://www.aldostools.com/freemem.html (http://www.aldostools.com/freemem.html)   This program can free memory when it hits a certain low point.

Dont take medicine by your self.
take a doctors advise. ;)

Your hardware information you have mentioned is quite
good for play most of the games in mame ecept of a Noami
emulation 3D games...
Try to keep configuration settings again.
In my advise use windows98 for using mame32...
