Title: switching between trackball and spinner
Post by: Scoobie on September 30, 2004, 12:16:43 am
I have noticed my spinner will stop working (sometimes mid game) after I have paused, then unpaused a game.  I have both my vortex spinner and Happ trackball connected to an Optipac.  It seems to do this even if I bump the machine/cp (or breathe on it).

Is there a setting I can change or adjustment I can make so the Optipac or spinner/trackball is not as sensitive?

Thanks!!

Not sure if you know this already but the optipac is designed so that if you're using one control the other is disabled.  I'm pretty sure it is this way to avoid any unwanted movement from the non-used control and/or somone walking by deciding they want to screw up your game of millipede by spinning the spinner as fast as humanly posible.

I'm guessing that it's the spinner that stops responding because I'm pretty sure it's more likely that when the machine gets bumped the trackball would be more likely to move and therefore take over control.

I know of no way to disable this feature if that is infact what you would like to do because I haven't hooked up two optical devices to my optipac yet and therfore haven't had the need to screw arround with that.

If you're using something other than Advmame, all optical inputs (mice) are treated as the first player's so what you can do is hook up the spinner to P2 on the optipac and I believe that should work.

So if I were to connect my trackball to P1, and spinner to P2, would they both work simultaneously?

I have this problem sometimes - even without touching 'the other' device...

Oscar's DPDT switch is probably the easiest, and most effective, solution to this.
It FORCES the other control to go dead.
It also eliminates the need for the Opti-pac.
You can wire both controllers to a single mouse hack, and swap between them manually.

Since you already have the Opti-pac, you could continue to use that; but splice the spinner into the x-axis on the trackball, following Oscar's instructions.

I was trying to avoid using a switch if possible (I just don't want one on my control panel really).  It is a good solution tho, I may end up doing it...

It doesn't need to be on the panel itself.
You could hide it inside the coin door, under the CP, etc...

This worked great.  Both the spinner and trackball can be moved at the same time, but this rarely happens.  The important part of this is that my spinner will work right away, even if I bump the trackball or machine.

Thanks for the help!
