Title: myHTPC for frontend? WOW!!
Post by: AGGIEZ on September 29, 2004, 03:49:27 pm
Check out what this guy used for his MAME frontend! Nice and clean, easy to make custom lists and sort by genre. What every frontend should have. Setup sounds a little painful, but the results are awesome!

I have looked into this.  It was a royal pain in the butt.  You had to have stuff mySql server running to database all your games and all sorts of stuff.  It was just too much of a pain to setup.  I approached this originally though, because I loved the idea of using a HTPC-type interface to browse through games.  It is something that no Mame frontend has really done well yet.  I hope someone goes that direction eventually.

You can do genre sorting on most of the current frontends if you want to put some effort into it.
You just have to do it a different way.
With this method, you need to program a database, which needs to be running as mentioned above.
With the other frontends, you can custom build your genre settings by putting games in, or taking them out of a given list.

I have gamelists that sort by control type (shooting/driving/double stick/spinner/etc...), screen orientation, and monitor type (vector/raster)--which has always been good enough for me.
If I WANTED to put the effort into it, I could further divide the current lists into fighter/shooter/climber/maze/etc... but have never seen a need for this myself.

I have two categories in Game Launcher: "favorites" (AKA "stuff I actually play") and "all".  ;)

Recognize that! I have the 5000 ROM "Main List" and then the 300 (or so) ROM "Dream Arcade." I just keep it in Dream Arcade unless I feel adventurous!

I haven't tried this yet, but GameEx is supposed to take the headache out of using MAME in MyHTPC / Meedio.

Take a peek

I've tried both.  the myhtpc software is difficult to setup and takes a while to load.

GameEx is nice as it fits right into Medic Center without issue.  Works well, although I was having sound issues that I don't think are directly related to the software.
