Title: Joust controlpanel -accurate colors?
Post by: Carsten Carlos on September 26, 2004, 07:34:19 am
I've some problems to find out what the "real" colours of Joust might be, as I havn`t seen an original one for at least 20 years!

Of course monitors are calibrated differently, but which picture might match the colors more likely?

I need this for a new swappable controlpanel I'm currently working on. :)

Also, I thought the background of the vinyl had a dark brown tint instead of black, am I right?

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but if this panel is for your own use, my suggestion would be to pick the overlay with the colors you like best and use that one.

Aside from that, here's a scan of a Williams advertisment from 1982. (It's from the Williams Arcade Classics CD.) It's hard to tell from the poor quality of the scan which color scheme is pictured, but it might help. Also, I noticed a way to differentiate the two overlays regardless of monitor callibration - the top one in your picture has red lava flowing across the stone platforms, and the bottom one is lavaless.

One more suggestion - This is just a wild guess, but Williams released two versions of Joust. The first version allowed you to skewer pteradactyls forever. A second version was released which corrected this "bug." Maybe the two overlays you have pictured were used to differentiate the two versions of the game, in which case both could be considered "original colors." -Just a thought, I might be way off base here.

Dave

Thanx, I decided to do just so - the attached picture is a bit to bright, but I like the results. :)

Those look perfect to me - it looks like you combined the best of both CPOs. How did you print them?

Thanx, I printed them on 140g paper with a large format inkjet printer (6 colors) and then laminated them. The controlpanel itself will be made with aluminimum, then laminated artwork covered with lexan, like the other controlpanels I did for my cab. :)
