Title: Defender cab help and cab ID assistance.
Post by: clanggedin on September 23, 2004, 03:51:23 pm
Yesterday I was lucky enough to ba able topick up 2 cabs from the local Nickelcade for $25 each. They are complete except the coin door locks and the boards.

When I opend up the back of the GUnforce cab There were a bunch of old manuals inside. After I pulled them out I then realized I have an old Defender cab with all of the documents to go with it. The other cab is padlicked and I haven't had time to cut the lock off, but I didn't see anything except papers on the monitor.

What I need to know is what the second cab is and if I should resore the defender cab. The bottom front panel has excessive water damage, but the side panels are OK. It was made out of plywood that needs alot of love to get smooth again.

Would I be better off just mameing both of them or restore them both, since they have pretty much everything I need still there. The second cab has a jamma harness in it too.

Would do the pros think??

hella deal yougot.  the cabs are in pretty good shape.  I have no skills to restore them to the orignal games but that is the common statement here.

save the originals

How did you NOT know that was a Defender?? hehe j/k

I'm not sure what the other cab is, although I'm sure you'll get a response from someone else here.  If it were me, I would definitely restore the Defender if possible.  Or at the very least, MAME it with a defender CP and run Defender on it with a simple low-end PC.  I just love those cabs, and it would be awesome to have a real Defender IMHO.

I just peeled off the Gunforce sticker and it took some of the glossy black paint that was under it with aloing too. It revealed some of the original artwork. I hope that a heat gun will allow me to peel away the paint and expose the defender stencil.

As soon as someone can help me identify the other cab, then this thread can be moved to the project section. The CP is original too. has the holes cut into it.

Looks like I have alot of work ahead of me if I want to restore the cab.

Restoration takes a ton of work.  I'm finished restoring a defender, or at least the cabinet, so taht the original boards could be put in and have it make no difference.  Unfortunately I didn't know about good paint stripping methods and SANDED down the 2-3 coats of paint over the original artowrk off.  Wow, It took somewhere close to 20 hours all told.  It looks great now, but man, I'd recommend against doing the sanding method.  =)
