Hi all,
Sorry if this has been posted before (as im sure it has...however after wading through a search of 100 topics, i bit the bullet and decided to start the topic).
With regards to cocktail glass...what is the standard used? Which thickness? And if its smoked (which i think mostly everyone uses) to what 'degree' or level of tint?
The cocktail cab Ive built uses a 1" thick piece of wood with a thin piece of vinyl over top. I also (obviously) need coctail clips to fasten the glass...so Im also wondering if theres any fellow canadians who know where I could pick some of those clips up.

Standard thickness for a midway style table is 1/4". Most are not smoked probably because originals weren't...maybe so there isn't smoked glass over the graphics. Some people do use smoked on their mame tables though. If you will be ordering your glass custom, the polish they usually have on the edge is called a "pencil polish" which is basically a rounded polished edge.

However, today I went to a glass shop (Crystal Glass they do windshields etc)...and the quote i got for a piece of glass looking like i want it was 1000 dollars!!!
He said it would be less to get Lexan or something but then it a) couldnt be smoked and b) would still be kinda pricey.
Are most people getting a piece of glass cut or am i missing something here?

I got my glass from a glazier and it only cost me $70.00 AUD.
I also used clear glass, and not tempered as the 1" MDF should give heaps of support.

Go to a glass shop that normally does things like glass tables and such. I got a 37"x27" tempered clear 1/4" thick with pencil polish for ~$100 US. My first table i ended up getting the glass from twobits. Actually if your top is standard size midway, I would recommend them just to avoid the hassle. Not worth trying to save a few bucks in my opinion:

I got a piece of glass cut for $53. They must be using special tiffany glass or something for $1000.

Would a reason he quoted me $1000 be that the glass I want cut is "very" custom.
The pic attached shows the shape of the top and I was hoping to have it cut in that shape (the only difference being a LITTLE of glass overhang over the control panels. So..theres quite a few rounded corners to make....would this make the huge difference?

Could be i suppose. I have never had glass made with "inside" cuts like that. Why don't you want the glass to just be even with the top and cover the panels like on a standard midway? Do you think it would get in the way because your panels are deep?

Those two parts that would be sticking out in the two corners would be very easy to crack off. My guess is that's why it would cost so much.

If you can go with a rectangle with rounded corners then you should get tempered glass 1/4". It isn't that expensive. I've had two pieces made so far, both were in the $30-40 range.
ALWAYS get tempered glass if you are using glass. It is much stronger than regular glass and regular glass is DANGEROUS if it breaks. Also, if you have exposed edges, you will want to pay the extra amount (about $10 for the pieces I've had, or about 20-25%). If the edges aren't exposed then you don't need to bother (tempering the glass makes the edges not sharp anyway). But the polished edge looks better if exposed.
For your table, you should either go with a rectangle shape or you'll have to go with plexi. Though, normally, I wouldn't recommend plexi as it doesn't look as good and it scratches easily versus tempered glass.
Oh, and both cocktails I have do not have tinted glass. One does have a thinner (1/8?) tinted plexi layer underneath the glass, which I believe is original. It is somewhat scratched so I will need to replace it eventually (already got new glass but some plexi scratches are visible through it).

I have a 1979 Midway Space Invaders cocktail. The glass is 1/4 inch and it is smoked.

no way! - glass is the best as it doesnt scratch so easilly
go for toughened (also refered to as tempered)
i got grey tinted and it looks sweet!
standard thickness is 1/4" or 6mm
