Title: TV Size
Post by: dmish82 on September 21, 2004, 01:16:01 pm
I was just curious as to what size tv(if you're using a tv that is) do most of you use in ur cab. Do most of you go 25" or is it possible a 27" can squeeze in there?

I have a 27" and I had to sand the insides a bit to get the TV to fit.  So you can get a 27 to fit.

But you have to find a 27" without the speakers on the side.  You need the TV speakers to be on the bottom.

I built a 25" cab.  27" seems too big for how close I am to the screen. 25" is borderline.

My next cabs are going to be 19", they are 2 player thought whereas my 25" is 4 player.

Bigger isn't always better.

Some games (robotron is a good example) stinks when you cant see the entire screen in your purifrial (sp??) vision.  I ended up using a bezel just to shrink it down on my 27" monitor (EYGO).

I would look for a 25" so you don't have to take it out of the case if possible.  This will save you the warranty on the tube.

And the quality of the svid is more important then the size... (assuming you can squeeze it in).

Last (did I already say that?) If your building your own... its easy to increase the width to the plans.  Then you can add a 33" no problem!

Oddly enough, 25" tv's are getting hard to come by and are actually larger, size-wise than the 27" tv's i'm looking at. It's pretty crazy. It's looking as if i'll be going w/ a 27" which will work nice b/c it's a 4 player cab.

The latest I built houses a 27".  It fits fine becuase I designed it to house a 27".

I'd prefer a 25" for the next one I build (which will be 2 player only) but as has been mentioned, they're getting a little harder to find in the configuration that works best for MAME cabinets.  (S-Video or component & speakers at the bottom.)

I noticed that too on 25" TVS. When I began building my cab in July yu could still buy 25"TVs, but when It was finished in Late Aug you couldn't find a 25" anywhere. Luckily I had one available that I culd use.

go 27"
Toshiba makes nice 27" TV that remember the power state and video input when unplugged and plugged in again.  No Speakers on the sides either.  Try to find a used one, it will fit into Lucids plans if you make the cabinet a couple inches wider, and still be skinny enough to fit through a standard door.

I used a 27" and I regret it for the reasons Lilwolf stated. If I had it to do over, I'd use a 25" instead.

I too have a 27" and no issues here. You guys must have small control panels and close to the TV. Playing a game, my eyes are approximately 32 inches from the screen.  No problems viewing the entire screen here.  I think if you design the cabinet with the distance from your eyes to the TV in mind, then a 27" TV is the way to go. Vertical games on a 27" TV are almost exactly the correct size. ( i.e. same size as it displays on a real 19" vertical arcade monitor).

my 2 cents

I just bought a Toshiba 27" tv and it doesn't seem big to me at all. Looks and feels just right. Then again my CP is 52" wide.  Here's a pic

I got a 27" TV - and built the cab to suit.  It's 4 player so I wanted a larger size screen like those on NBA Jam

Well i found a 27" TV that's relatively small dimensions(actually small than most 25" tv's i looked at). It was a Sansui TV on sale at best buy for $160 if anyone is looking for one and it fits great using the plans from project arcade. I am able to place about a 2" support underneath the tv to angle it upwards and I still have a bit of clearance between the tv and speaker shelf.
