I am planning a tabletop cab that is just going to run older games but I need a list of the greats! What are the games that you can think of that no respectable "classic cab" can be without? Thanks!
Oh yeah, I saw the list of games for VAntAGE and that is a great start (thanks Peale :))!

what can you say about the Pac Games, it spells out CLASSICS and the Space Invaders, asteroids/deluxe, scramble, berzerk, Galaxian/galaga etc..

Here are some of the ones I couldn't be without, although I don't know what controls you'll have on your tabletop.
Defender
Robotron
Joust
Tron
Time Pilot
Asteroids
Space Invaders
Centipede
Pac Man
Dig Dug
Frogger
Tempest
Gorf
Missle Command
There are many more that are considered 'classics'. For me a classic is one I played back then, and will still play today.

If I were you, I'd download catever.ini and fire up Mame32. They have a classics folder in there IIRC. I'd just run through that list and take the games that you like... adding the ones that you know you want if they aren't there.
If memory serves, the folder in Mame32 is basically just the older years of arcade games, but it's definitely a good starting point.

How about that great one called "Search the Message Board"?

I did. I tried "classic games" and "must have games" and "essential games" and came up with squat.
As for buttons on my cab, I am probably only going to have a 4/8 joystick and 3-4 action buttons at most. My CP is only going to be around 6"x15" so there's not much room for anything else. No Centipede for me... :( (until my next cab!)

Are you after games that actually came out in cocktail machines?
If so I've played the following classics on a cocktail machine:
RallyX (and New Rally X)
Joust
Time Pilot
Asteroids
Pac Man
Dig Dug
Frogger
Galaga
Galaxian
Lunar Lander
Donkey Kong
Ms Pac Man
Burnin' Rubber
Pengo
I'm sure there are more I've played, but these are all ones I can clearly remember (especially Rally X!)
