There are various recommendations (like from TwistyGrip's site and Cheep Tech)

If those sites recommend a PS2 mouse, you can use a PS2 to USB adaptor (pictured below)

Just get one of Oscar's USB Mouse Hacks, and one of his optic cards.
Anything else really isn't worth the trouble.
You could even pick up an encoder wheel from him while you're at it.
