Title: Autotagging MP3's?
Post by: Xynie on September 17, 2004, 02:34:07 pm
I have seen software these days that automatically tags your mp3 rips when you rip a new CD... that is not a problem.

Years ago, when I first began ripping my CD collection, I never paid attention to ID tags, so I am waaay behind.  Most new jukebox software uses these tags for sorting and such, so I want to catch up.

My question is... is there any software that is available that automatically tags mp3's based on a file?  When I bought my wife her first portable mp3 player years ago, it came with a program that you could take a file, and you could use this program and submit the file to a database and it would automatically tag it.  Unfortunatly I can't find the software, and I have no clue what it was.

So... is there anything out there... or should I just start in the first directory and work my way down :)

Thanks
Anthony

I know there are several that will tag from file name.

I did a quick search and came up with this list.  The first one looks like it will do what you want.

I am just struggling to come up with the names of the progs, because I've ripped all of my CD's and several others I "borrowed" to my relatives that I "borrowed" back to rip...and haven't purchased any lately...and since I used many to test, they all blend together....check my auto-rip sticky and see if EAC allows renaming by file name...I thought it would, but don't have it installed right now on this PC.

If I find out soon, I'll edit this post to let you know.

*edit*  It ain't EAC.  I think what I did was search download.com for freeware ID3 taggers.  The one I used would tag the file with the file name already there, but I'd have to manually enter in things like genres, year, etc.  I skipped the stuff like "year" and was able to select several files at a time to enter in "genre", so mine are tagged with Album Name, Song #, Song Title, Artist, and Genre.  The only thing I had to enter in was Genre.

For anyone else who may need something like this, DR. Tag was very very close to what I was looking for, and is working great.

I've had great results with "Tag & Rename" from http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm

If you have all your songs for one album listed in the correct order it will fill out the tag-information from the freedb database.  Fill tag tag info from filename etc. etc.
Best tag program I've ever used.
