I am looking for a webhost for my site that I want to put up about my cabinet. I'd prefer free, but a small fee would be alright. All I'm really interested in is perhaps server side includes (SSI) support, but it's not required. Most ISPs give you free 10 meg accounts or something, but not mine. My ISP charges $5.00 a month for 1-3 MB, then jumps to $20.00 for 4 - whatever MB, PLUS a $40.00 set up fee! It's not like I have my phone AND DSL through them or anything... I'd think 10 MB for that would be reasonable, but I guess not. Anyway, I thought I'd just ask those of you that have web sites if you've found any diamonds in the rough out there.
P.S. No Geocities or the like!

A friend of mine runs this site:
http://www.limshosting.com/
He's got a $9 plan which isn't super cheap, but it's pretty good.
20 MB, 5 email accounts, etc.
I'm on the $15 plan which includes 10 mailboxes, mySQL, web-based ftp utility, 200 MB space (although it appears that I have much more than that).
It looks like Server Side Include comes with all packages.
Post a reply or PM me if you are interested.

Sounds interesting, but I'll wait and see what else there is first before deciding. Thanks for the help!

I think the best deal is at A+ Hosting. For $6.95 you get the following:
- 300MB web space
- 10GB data transfer limit
- 20 email addresses
- SSI and more
I know this sounds like a pitch for them, but I just found them to be a really great company. I personally started using them about 3 or 4 years ago and never had any problem. Check them out here http://www.aplushosting.com/english/products-special.phtml (http://www.aplushosting.com/english/products-special.phtml)
-
JaguarPC (http://www.jaguarpc.com) - been using them for 4 years or so
For $7.95 per month you get:
1 GB storage
Unlimited email accounts
45 GB monthly transfer
50 FTP accounts
30 MySQL databases
SSI
CGI, MySQL, PHP, SSH access, etc, etc
-
Here are a bunch I've never heard of :)

Ipowerweb. (http://www.ipowerweb.com/)
$7.95/mo
1 gig storage, 500 email addresses, etc, etc, etc
-
there is a site in Austria which has free 50mb etc, but unfortunatly its all in german...
I found it googling for free webspace!
U might try that.
This one doesnt even want ads placed on ur sites!
So if there is one, there must be more, who do it....
What about Lycos, dont they have free webspace?
-
I really like 1and1 they are both "big"/reputable (so they won't disapear overnight) and reasonably priced... They aren't some half arse reseller just chopping up rackshack or server beach servers...
1 and 1 internet (http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=6833362)
I have a dedicated server with them and it survived a slashdotting so, i've been a fan ever since.
They have tons of different tiers/options... but the beginner linux version is 4.99/month and pretty feature rich (IMHO)
* Includes 1 domain at no additional cost
* 1,000 MB web space
* 200 POP3 accounts
* 25 GB monthly transfer volume
* 1 Virus Scanner included
* 1&1 Chat
* 10 subdomains
* Linux based
*shrug* YMMV but so far I've had a good experience with 1and1 (knocks on wood)

I'm currently hosting my personal web site with Veoweb:
http://www.veoweb.net/
I've been with them for about 4 years.
I'm thrilled with the amount of features I get for my money but the service has gone downhill in the last year.
So I'm in the process of switching to Lunarpages:
http://www.lunarpages.com/
They have two plans:
http://www.lunarpages.com/plan.htm
$7.95 /mo - unlimited email, 1000 MB storage, 40GB/mo bandwidth
$22.95 /mo - unlimited email, 1500 MB storage, 80GB/mo bandwidth
The cool thing is that you can get JSP & Servlet support for an additional $2 a month.

http://freewebhosting.hostdepartment.com/
SirPoonga has his webpages here and I was considering it during a recent hiatus.
100 Meg of webspace totally free, the only restrictions is there is a popunder ad for them that pops up when you exit, and they don't allow downloads.
EDIT: Forgot to mention free unlimited bandwidth. Also, uploads are a little flightly, took several tries to get my stuff up, but it worked okay.
Example pages:
http://freewebhosting.hostdepartment.com/S/SirPoonga/yabcab.html
http://freewebhosting.hostdepartment.com/t/tigerheli/
NOTE: my current pages are at www.mameworld.net/tigerheli/ (but that's not generally available)

You should check out WestHost.com (http://www.westhost.com). They are currently having a special going for free domain registration. Also, they have a game online called "HostWars" which is basically astroids (it's a flash game) and the highest score each month gets a free year of hosting. It's free to play, you just go to http://games.westhost.com/hostwars/. If you're no good at asteroids, their prices are reasonable, they have a $6.95 package with:
- 600 MB Disk Space
- 10 GB Bandwidth
- blah blah blah (just go to http://www.westhost.com/web-hosting.html to see their packages).
Anyway, the HostWars game should appeal to most of the users on this forum anyways. Check it out, it's not a bad game.

I've been using ICDsoft.com
for $5 a month you get:
333mb space
5gb monthly transfer (my only problem with them)
1 MySQL database
5 subdomains
6 FTP accounts
unlimited email accounts.
very good online control panel.
$5 domain registration
If you don't need huge data transfer, it's pretty good for $5.
JoyMonkey.com manages to squeeze in at between 4 and 4.5gb
transfer a month, but if I had a larger transfer limit (like 1&1's
25gb) I'd have a lot more on the site.
I think I'll make the switch to 1&1 in November, even though the
$5 linux package doesn't include MySQL, I'll probably never get
around to really learning MySQL anyway.

<snip>
Post a reply or PM me if you are interested.
After I posted, I thought this was funny. I included the URL so there would be no need to PM me. Must have been past my bedtime.
As I suspected, there are a bunch of cheaper alternatives out there.

I have been using E-Rice.net (http://www.e-rice.net) for a couple of sites. I've been with them for about 2 years and so far no I've never had a problem. And they're cheap. ;D
Standard 1 : $10/yr
100MB space - 3GB/mo transfer - 10 Emails - 1 DB
Standard 2 : $20/yr
200MB space - 6GB/mo transfer - 20 Emails - 2 DB
Standard 3 : $30/yr
300MB space - 9GB/mo transfer - 30 Emails - 3 DB
They also have plans for static web pages that are even cheaper.

395hosting.com
One plan, $3.95/mo, or $35 per year.
100 mb storage
10 gb bandwidth
As many user accounts as you like
html, ftp, cgi, majordomo, mysql, and other stuff I'm not sure about. The reporting alone is worth the price. I've been with them over a year and the service is very reliable: 99.9%+

Well I'd recommend this company: Webhosting Buzz
http://www.webhostingbuzz.com/buzzfactor.html
The names a little on the stupid side(my opinion at least!) but they have good service at the best prices I've seen.
10 Gigs bandwidth each month
500 Mb storage
Unlimited: Add-On Domains, e-mail, MySQL, POP3, subdomains, Parked domains, mailing lists, FTP accounts...etc.
All for $36 a year
You can upgrade to 1 Gig of HD storage and 20 Gigs of bandwith for only $48 a year.
Quick note...If you have multiple domains or ever plan on having more then one website, you MUST get something with Unlimited Add-On Domains. If you're not sure what that is, its basically a feature that lets you share your hosting plans with another domain name. I've got 5 different domains(some of mine own and some of my friends) all using my one hosting account. So I'm saving a ton of money because I dont have to pay for individual hosting plans.

Too bad someone can't put this as a sticky or something so that other people looking for a host for their site can use this info. Many posters on this forum probably are looking for a host, too. Thanks for the info! Although I have to get around to making a site up first. That also implies that I finish my cabinet, too. Ah, laziness, will I ever break free from your comforting grip?

I've got a 400meg site hosted on www.webmasters.com.
$10/month and it includes everything.
To simplify customer options, Webmasters offers only one shared hosting plan which includes all the tools anyone would need to operate a full featured E-commerce website. For $9.95/month, customers enjoy generous disk space and bandwidth limits of 750MB and 10GB. Add to that a "one of a kind" control panel and webmaster tools and it's obvious why Webmasters has one of the most comprehensive and competitively priced hosting packages in the industry.

go to the forums at www.freewebspace.net/forums/ . Go to "Free Hosting Offers"
You might find somethin you like...(FWS is not my site!)

i'm using the domain and email forwarding with additional pop accounts from 1and1. then i linked it with a geocities site, but the domain name is always what shows. this is even the case with the many, many other yahoo accounts that i set up to get more geocities accounts, so the domain name is in the address bar even off the site that i registered with 1and1 unless someone goes directly to a specific url of a page by typing in http://www.geocities.com/.........etc. most would find the tree of sites and account that i have grown to be too much of a pain, but when you are broke and in college, a couple bucks a month to not look silly giving out a 7 page url to your free isp site isn't a bad thing either. ;)

Just use a .tk

I'll third that recommendation. Have two sites (1 personal, 1 business) with them & have never had any problems. Great live support too. They speak (clear) english.

1&1 hosting seems popular. And cheap. Cheap is good when you've spent all your money on your cab and on car repairs ;D !
-
Did I mention that this was FREE!
FREE?!? It MUST be good!
(if this commercial hasn't been seen by you yet, then please disregard this inane post, however, if it HAS been seen by you...what kind of dopey person IS that who says that the way that lady did ::) )
As you were. Carry on.
;D

fWIW, what I like best about 1and1 plans (http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=6833362) (plan dependent) is that you can assign multiple domains to the same webspace... so I can host multiple sites without paying for another shared hosting account.
ymmv of course =)

Yoda.. what did you decide?
-
Decided on 1 and 1 I have. Yesssss!
The force is strong in this one. The force is not strong in my wallet, however, so I'm gonna use a free host for now. Then I'll get an account with 1 and 1.

Hey, I'm new and happened upon this thread. I was in the same boat a while ago, didn't want to shell out too much money but at the same time wanted a really good web host (tired of crappy Geocities). I used this web site http://www.webhostingdiscounts.net/ and was able to get 40% off the cost of my web hosting. I signed up with Globat.com through them, which I wanted to sign up with all along but felt it was too pricey, but since I got 40% off that made it do-able. They offer a discount on tons of other popular hosts too, I just happened to choose Globat, who has been decent so far I guess.
Hope this helps.
-
I signed up with Globat.com through them...
Wow! It sounds like you work for WebHostingDiscounts, but that Globat.com deal seems pretty good. 75gb transfer for $8 a month! It's still more than I want to pay, but very tempting...
Does anyone else have any experience with Globat.com? I was about to sign up at 1and1.
-
I bit the bullet and signed up at globat.com - five minutes later a real live person phoned me to confirm my order and said my hosting account would be ready in about half an hour!
Now I just have to figure out how to transfer my domain (if I need to). All this DNS nameserver stuff is a little confusing to me.
Then I need to figure out what to do with all that bandwidth. I guess I can stop whining about bandwidth on my Mame32 archive page
Edit: My experience with Globat was anything but good. Even after cancelling they still proceeded to charge me for hosting I wasn't using. I've since moved to 1and1.com and am very happy with them.
DO NOT USE GLOBAT
-
I signed up with Globat.com through them...
Wow! It sounds like you work for WebHostingDiscounts,
Actually I don't, a friend of mine sent me the link when I told him I was looking for a good but cheap web host on what I could afford. Cool that you signed up for Globat, I've been with them for a few weeks and despite some initial problems things have smoothed out. Did you go through the discount site and get 40% off? When I did I got like $38 bucks back, so instead of $95 for the year my net cost was about $57, not too shabby for what you get with Globat. Hope you have a good experience with them.
