Title: help with Win98SE
Post by: Raven.. on September 14, 2004, 02:48:21 am
I found an HD sitting around my house and decided I needed another MAME drive.  I fdisked and formatted, but when I tried to install Win 98SE, it kept giving me a "Packed File Corrupt" error.  and wouldn't install.  Any clues about this one guys?

Did you do a web search at all?

Yeah I did a websearch before posting on here....guess I should have stated that.  It's not a virus, nor a memory load issue.  I think it's just a crapped-out HD now.  I couldn't even get MSDOS to install on it.

Go to the drive manufacturer's website (Maxtor, Western Digital, etc.)  Download and run their formatting and diagnostic software on the drive.  If it checks out okay, try to install 98SE again and see if the problem clears up.

those sites will probably have a tool that will let you zero out the hdd.  that may help clear out any file structure errors..
