Title: What's it worth .... Return of the Jedi??
Post by: GCS on September 09, 2004, 01:13:29 pm
A friend of mine (who owes me a few $$$) has a pretty nice Return of the Jedi (stand up) he wants to give me instead of $$$.  Its in pretty darn nice shape and works 100% but the monitor needs a cap job, no burn in that I can tell.  Could use your standard cleaning but nothing horrible.

I know the "collectibility" factor will help its value but truly what's it worth??

Thanks in advance.

Greg

It's too bad it's not a Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back vector, those would be worth more.  If this is the Return game I am thinking of (speeder bikes, 3/4 top down view) then it is worth between $100 and $200 depending on how nice a shape it's in.

however, the yoke alone might might fetch a pretty penny on ebay, if i recall correctly, its the same yoke as a star wars, with a different sticker.

a lot...

not an extreme..

the controller if in great shape can go for 150-200 on ebay

the monitors can go for a ton... because they are very hard to find.

but a bigger issues...wheren't these ALL kits for existing starwars cabs?  If so you might want to convert it back... and then it will be worth a bit

I would say $700 - $1k... but finding a buyer might be hard...  So not good for a quick turn around.

Well this is definitely to nice to "part out".

Surprised its not worth a little more but I guess SW was really the bread winner here not RotJ.

Thanks fellas.

Lilwolf, I beg to differ... IIRC the return of the Jedi game was a RASTER game, not the lovly vector (and hard to find/replace color vector monitors) of star wars and ESB.

And I'm pretty sure it was much different cabinet (i'm thinking lots of plastic for some reason) compared to the original cab(s)/cockpit.

*shrug*  i'd value it lower than that, but I don't really know anything...

The yoke is worth 100 - 150 on ebay though =)  (i paid 120 for mine)

ROTJ was not a conversion kit for a star wars, and did not use a vector monitor.

Unfortunately, I think the real value of it is in the controller (yoke), although it was a pretty unique cabinet, and they aren't very common, AFAIK.

So GCS... basically how much are you owed? If you're owed about $300-$350 or less then take the machine.

I have never seen a Return of the Jedi go for less than $400, usually $500+

Remember it is a Star Wars game here.

The bigger question here is what is it worth to YOU?

If it's something you are going to part out, or not play, then I'd pass on it.
Let someone who will really appreciate it have it.

If you're just taking it to resell it, I'd pass as well.
Let the other guy worry about selling it for what HE can get for it, and then pay you what he owes you.

If you really like the game, and will play it, then go for it.

-------------------

My take on games is the same as my take on any other "collectible".

I was out hunting with one of my friends, and his DAD'S gun (that he borrowed to go hunting) bounced across the seat of his truck, and hit my bow.
He about freaked because it was a "collectors edition" Weatherby rifle, and his dad was going to kill him for getting a scratch on it.
My thought is why buy something if you aren't going to USE it, and ENJOY it?

By contrast I have another hunting partner that took a "vintage" Winchester Model 70 (low serial number) to THREE gunsmiths, to have a scope put on it, before he found one that would actually DO it.
They kept telling him about how it would "lower the value" of the gun, and he should "sell THAT one, and buy a different gun to put a scope on", etc...
He LIKED that gun, he ENJOYS shooting that gun, and he WANTED a scope on it.
His take was that until he SELLS that gun, which he isn't going to do (he feels that's his kid's problem), HE isn't losing anything on it.

My point here is that stuff is only worth what YOU think it's worth.
Beany Babies are a good example.
Look at how many people "invested" in them a few years ago, and what they are "worth" today.

Getting back to arcade cabinets, there are certain cabinets that I would personally pay MORE than what they "go" for, if they were in good condition.
Then there are the others that I wouldn't pay LESS than what they go for, even if they were in PERFECT condition.

There are a couple more factors involved here than perceived value. Will this friend ever re-pay you? If he's a dead-beat, maybe you should take the machine even if you don't like it.  ;D

A very nice ROTJ sold for $475 at the last K'Zoo auction I was at.  It was in great shape with all the artwork intact and fully working.  Seems like a lot of the ROTJ's I've seen are pretty beat up.

My thoughts exactly.  I would pay a lot for a fully working Vanguard.  That was a favorite game I played as a kid, I have a lot of fond memories of me and my friends playing it after school at the local coffee house.  I was so disappointed the first time I played Vanguard in MAME.  The sound isn't accurate, and that just spoiled it for me.  So If I could find a decent Vanguard It would be worth more to me than what the "going rate" happens to be.

Personally, I would let your friend off the hook and take the game.  If he is a real friend he will appreciate you doing this for him.  Plus, you never know, you might find someone like me willing to buy it for top dollar.  Probably not, but you can enjoy it in the meantime.

So right so right.

thinking of the wrong star wars game.

I change all my answers...

Thanks for all the input folks it is appreciated.

Personally I do like the game but the thing is I need the $$ (we all have bills to pay ya know).

I am owed over 2K and have negotiated to get a couple of pins for partial payment but what he really has is plenty of vids.  Most work fine but are not so hot titles and such aren't worth much and so I would be stuck with them.

The 2 items of greatest value (video wise) are this RotJ and a 4P X-Men (also in really nice shape) but he is putting a much higher $$ value on them I think they are worth (600 for RotJ and 400 for the X-Men).  If I can't turn them around fairly quickly for at least that than it is a waste of my time to move them and all that + I get hosed $$ wise.

He is a good friend and is in the business but things are bad for him at the moment (I know not my problem) so I want to help where I can but I cannot afford to get hosed of course.

Basically I was just picking the forum's experienced brains to find out if this was worth the time and effort or not and it seems its not (as I expected).

So again I thank you for your thoughts (some preachier than others  :) and time.

I did forget one other thing, the other item of value (so I am told) is a Defender Cocktail.  I had never seen one of these until I saw it at his house.

Are these rare and worth anything?

I would guess that the defender cocktail would have a better resale value... at least for home buyers.

why?

I would LOVE to have one!

But... like others... no cash here...  sigh...

You know what. If he's truly a good friend, and he's willing to part with this ROTJ that HE thinks is worth $600, then make HIM sell it and give you the cash. Otherwise this guy who's calling himself a friend is just screwing you.

A Defender cocktail in nice shape is worth way more than the other two games.

Again thanks for the advice folks.

And for the record this is a good friend who is trying to square things with me.  He is trying to sell these things off to generate cash to give to me but he is has #s in his head and isn't willing to back off but so much on them.

have him sell them then... and give you the cash.

but try to get the defender cocktail for yourself :)

btw, if he keeps pinball games.  They retain their value better the video games and actually are going up about 100 a year or so.  So if he has any around and willing to trade them in.

Given the choice, I'd go with this one.
