Title: Spinner knob WHICH ONES DO YOU GUYS LIKE?
Post by: koolmoecraig on September 08, 2004, 09:54:17 pm
Hey all,

I am about to order my spinner from Oscar. I need help choosing a knob. Can a brother get some opinions?

I have the anodised black spinner for my Vortex ( yes I got the MAME engraving, I'm such a dweeb ) and it rocks.

When I get arround to getting a spinner I plan to get the up/down tron spinner along with the DOT black anodized knob.  You should be cool like me and do the same!  J/K...

I like the factory knobs on the Tron spinners best.
The straight sided anodized ones that Oscar has feel very similar to these.

I have DOT knobs on my up/downs because they are really hard to use with any other knob.

I really DON'T like the Tempest knobs, but that's personal preference.

I got Oscar's DOT knob for my Vortex, it's a natural aluminum one, but I think it's now discontinued. Check out the  spinner knobs review (http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/roundup6.html) by Kevin Steele.

I have a polished aluminium Tempest knob (I think you can only get these in black now)...contrary to NoOne=NBA= I really like it, as I find quick movements really easy to do and it has nice grips so you can stop it very quickly.

I think the reason I don't like the Tempest knobs is that they have that skirt at the bottom of them.

I learned to play spinner games on games that didn't have that (like Tron).
The style I developed on those is to drag my fingers on the CP overlay a bit for control when I need it.
The Tempest knob doesn't let you do that, so my performance suffers a bit with it.

Heh... gotta love the quik-bunny spinner.  But I had to have a Tempest knob... and frankly I love it.  Oddly enough, the one thing that gets me is the milling is so sharp that my fingers feel abraded after a while; those 90-degree corners are pretty precise!

Guess my only option is to play it enough to wear it down... woot!

I have a Slikstik skirted (in anodised blue to match the rest of my controls). I think that design is pretty spiffy.

I'm using a slikstik 2-tone one on an Oscar vortex spinner :)

I got the Tempest replica knob (in black) to go with my Vortex and I absolutely love it.  I mean c'mon, Tempest is WHY the spinner was put on this earth, right??  :)

Nope.

Tempest was put out by some right-handed wacko who didn't know any better.

The spinner didn't really hit its prime until they moved it to the RIGHT (read: LEFT) side of the cabinet.

I'm actually a little surprised by the amount of feedback on the DOT knobs.  Even though that knob is my personal 2nd favorite after the Tempest one, it is the slowest mover over all the other aluminum knobs by a long shot!  The regular and engraved knobs outsell the DOT knob by about 4:1, and the Tempest knob outsells it by closer to 15:1.

On the last couple batches of the Tempest knobs, I've had them tumble deburred to knock off the edges on the knurl prior to the anodizing.  That makes them much smoother.

If anyone has played Tempest at Clay's Ground Kontrol (http://www.groundkontrol.com), then you have used my Tempest knob.  :)   Clay had some knobs from my first run, and he told me that after about 2 weeks in the arcade the knurl had smoothed down a bit and it felt very nice, and it is holding up very well in the arcade.  It is very common for original Tempest knobs to be wobbly, off-center, and cracked; which is why Clay was interested in something more durable that would keep looking nice for a long time.  I think Clay has had my Tempest knob in his arcade for about a year now, and he has been very pleased with it from what I've been told.

Odd that I'm right handed but offset my spinner to the left.  I really like using my left hand for spinner & right hand for buttons.

All this talk about knobs is making me want the black Tempest one...

It's not odd Minwah.
That's the point I was making.
They apparently realized their mistake, and started putting them on the left from that point on.

And I LOVE the DOT knobs Oscar.
The larger size gives a little better control I think.

The only thing I like better about the "regular" knobs is that the bottom of them sits closer to the CP than the DOT knob, which fits my playstyle a little better.
If I didn't have the up/downs, I probably would have bought the regular knob for both.

I think another reason that the DOT knobs aren't bigger sellers is that they may be misconstrued as a "specialty" item, to be used ONLY with the up/down spinners.

I see...I wasn't sure if right handed players prefer 'spinning' with their right hand.  I suppose most people use joysticks in their left hand, buttons right, so it makes sense.

I have a DOT knob also...I really like it too - just for some reason when I had been using it on my CP I found myself wanting to go back to the Tempest.  I think perhaps I find it easier to get an instant, quick twist with the smaller diameter of the Tempest knob.
