This newbie needs some direction........
Last night I loaded up MAME (DOS version) and some ROMS on my new computer. As far as I can tell, everything is working great using the computer keyboard.
I would like to install a front-end, but have no idea WHAT to use, or WHERE to get it. I tried Arcade Maximus, but it doesn't support Windows 98.
ANY and ALL suggestion will be GREATLY appreciated !!!!

Well, just about every other frontend in existance works for windows 98, so just pick another one. Seems that you picked the odd man out.
-
Are all the others equal??
Any recommendations??

a good source for emulators and frontends is Zophar's domain (www.zophar.net)

Dig it?

I have a 500 mhz with a very poorly maintained win 98, and MameWah is the choice for me.
I'm just trying out the new version... we'll see how that goes.
-
THANKS !!!!
VERY HELPFUL !!!!
-
im using arcadeos, been using it for about 2 years on both my cabs, lots of support for other emulators like atari 2600, etc. fairly easy to setup too
i'd recommend you trying as many as you can get your hands on, its really a matter of personal preference.
good luck and drop me a line if ya need help with arcadeos

Arcade Maximus??? What the heck

Arcade Maximus??? What the heck
I was just going to post this after doing a quick Google on it...now I just second the motion, and swap the "heck" with an "f". WTF?
-
so lemme get this straight.. Maximus Arcade is a front end that is basically a shittier version of MameWah.. but they want $20 for it?

I think they wanted $80 or $90 for it previously...

Sounds like you don't like MAMEWAH.
-
I'd put my vote in for MAMEWAH.
I've used it on a couple rigs now, and had great results.
It lacks some features that some of the others have, but filled all the needs I had for a front end.
I didn't see any reason to switch to another FE, just to have features available that I wasn't going to use anyway.
-
I had access and owned a decent range of older Celeron processes. I tried many frontends on Win98se and motherboard set-ups from a Cel 300 up through to Cel1700.
My preference: MAMEWAH. Not spotless under some system set-ups, but damn fine and relatively easy to fix problems.
Very Very easy to set-up good looking frontend themes with basic Photoshop or equivalent knowledge and included editor.
My 2 cents.

I'm saying that mamewah is a superior and free program that serves the same function... I'm not getting where you came to this conclusion. :-\
The only thing I can see that it has going for it that the latest release of mamewah doesn't is built in jukebox software. I don't really think it's that big of a deal either way, but it's something Minwah can throw in the next release if he's bored ;)

Heh....I see what you were trying to say but when you say "shittier" it means the first example was shite, and the second was "shittier" than the first. :)

Not really. Simple English here folks. Nothing in his original sentance implied that Mamewah was no good. If he'd stated that the Maximus thing was "an even shittier version of Mamewah," then you could assume that he thought Mamewah was no good.

as u are just talking about Mamewah atm, I have a little question:
If I change the skin, I have problems with the writing, it is always too big(72).
If I correct that in the settings and put the writing to size 10 and I try to start it, it gives me an error =(
Any way of correcting that problem or do u have a waterproof solution?
thanx a lot !!!
MameWah would then be definatly also my choice!

No, actually you have right exactly what I assumed (and for the record, I knew that it was probably worded different.) But you don't have to use the word even to imply they both suck.
Nephus: Did you try to put in sh*tty? I was typing that that would have been the correct way to word it but it filtered the word out. If that's the case then I can understand why you worded it the way you did.
Anyway, since we all agree that MAMEWAH is a great frontend let's leave it at that. :)

Alright! a grammatical hair-splitting. I'm in.
The word "version" is inherently a comparitive. Adding the term "shitey" is a descriptive comparison as in "Maximus is a shitey version of Mamewah", which would imply that Mamewah is not shitey. By using the comparitive adjective "shittier" with the comparitive noun "version" you are implying either a second comparison with a 3rd object (X is a shitey version of Mamewah, but Maximus is a shittier version) or a second order of shittiness (Mamewah is shitey and Maximus is a shittier version). Since only two objects were being discussed, then the implication is that Mamwah is also shitey. Gregor is correct.
The phrase "an even shittier version of Mamewah," implies at least 3 objects with at least 2 comparisons, which again would be incorrect in this case. For example, "Alaska is an even bigger state than Texas", makes no sense unless we had been discussing a 3rd state.

Those damn pop-ups are a nuisance though. Mameworld (http://www.mameworld.net/) gives a lot of links to frontends too and is less "shittier".

As for the pop-ups, use Firefox. Been using it for a while now and haven't gone back to Internet Explorer since.

Not being funny but where are you from? Some regional settings can cause MAMEWAH problems (esp. with layouts). Make sure your Decimal Symbol is set to '.' and not ',' for starters (many European countries use ',').

Me.
It happens all the time on the Unreal Tournament clan board I run.
One of our players is a professional writer (amongst her other jobs), I do graphics and typesetting, and a third guy is a proofreader.
Then there's the contingent of people we have who are prone to interpretting any comment directed at them in the worst possible light, and the "I just want to be funny and PRETEND I misunderstood that post" people.
Makes for some great fun when people post ANYTHING that could be misinterpretted.

i don't promise anything, I will ask him.

edit:
OK an english version and the english html pages are on the road, but before youki whises to produce a nnon beta version. some work still in progres.
be patient ;)

Sorry to disagree with you here, but one thing about your argument is just plain wrong. x is shitter than y means that x is worse than y, not that x is bad at all. Think about it this way, if you asked for someone's opinion about a program, and they thought it sucked, they would say, "don't use 'a', because 'b' is better. This implies in no way that 'a' is at all good, only that 'b' is more good. For all intents and purposes 'a' could be the worst program ever, and the previous sentence would not in any way imply a sense of positive worth to program 'a'. If you want to imply a qualitative value in a comparitive sentence you have to use an adjective that modifies it(e.g. this is good, but that is better; or alternatively this is sucky, this is better).
and -er suffix words are used only in reference to comparing two things or two groups of things, if three or more things are used, either there is some sort of grouping implied(i.e. A and B are better than C) or two things are being compared then two other things. the superlative has to be used when making a concurrent comparison of three or more groups -- of A, B, and C, B is the best -- this of course does not imply any value ,of goodness in any sense except that b has more goodness than A or C.
-
Sorry to disagree with you here, but one thing about your argument is just plain wrong. x is shitter than y means that x is worse than y, not that x is bad at all . . . This implies in no way that 'a' is at all good, only that 'b' is more good.
We actually aren't disagreeing but you have to be careful about sentence structure. The syntax you demonstrated is not the syntax that was used in the post. Specifically, the comparitive word "version" which is already an implied comparison was used.
"A is a tall version of B" explicitly means that A is taller than B AND implicitly means that B is not tall. It makes an initial comparitive without using -er.
. . . and -er suffix words are used only in reference to comparing two things or two groups of things . . . the superlative has to be used when making a concurrent comparison of three or more groups.
Yes, but be careful of sentence structure.
"A is a tall version of B, but C is the tallest" is correct structure using a comparison of 3 objects and -est. However, if I throw in the word "version" at the end of the sentence then my comparison changes from 3 objects to only 2 "versions".
"A is a tall version of B, but C is a taller version".
The -er comparitive is now the appropriate one becuase B is not a version and therefore the comparison is between A and C only ("Of the two versions, C is the taller.")
The following pairs of sentences have different meanings
"A is a bad copy of B"
"A is a worse copy of B"
"Maximus is a shitey version of Mamewah."
"Maximus is a shittier version of Mamewah."
The first sentence in each pair implies that the object noun is the oppositie of the subject noun. The second sentence in each pair implies that both subject and object nouns are similar in description but the subject noun, comparitively more so.
-
What the??

-
yawn ::)

ok, I see your point here with the use of er and version; It does seem to imply more than its explicit meaning. The way the original sentence was worded more implies that he is trivializing arcade maximus as a stupid rip-off of mamewah.
so lemme get this straight.. Maximus Arcade is a front end that is basically a shittier version of MameWah.. but they want $20 for it?
He is expressing contempt for the fact that they are charging 20 dollars for a copy-cat product that is inferior. I think given the context, his intent should be clear; and given the fact that using the word "version" doesn't explicitly mean anything different than a normal comparative, I think we can safely assume the intended meaning, which was made crystal clear in a following post.
-

Agreed.

Not that it really matters, but in an attempt to get this thread back on track, it sounds like MameWah is the preferred frontend. I recall someone else mentioning ArcadeOS. Are there any strong arguemnts either way on these two, or does it really come down to personal preference?
I've been using Mame32, mainly because it was easy to set up, but now that I'm starting to build a cab with real controls, I'm looking for alternatives. To me, running Mame32 isn't really practical in that situation.
I assume these discussions can quickly turn into the classic PC/Mac holy wars, but I am kind of looking for other's experiences (or should I just mention Hitler and end the thread right now?) ;)

Pop-ups?
"The" ParticL is using IE?
try Zophar's domain on a real browser, like FireFox, and you'll forget the web even has pop-ups (I forgot until I read your post)
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
(only 4.7MB)
It's free, dosen't mess with your IE, and 9 out of 10 Helens prefer it*.
Groovy?

Use ArcadeOS if you're planning on using DOS. I use MAMEWAH .97 and it fits my needs perfectly. Since you used MAME32 I'll assume you're going to be using Windows. If that's the case then go with MAMEWAH.

First thanx for ur answer!
I come from Germany and yes, we have that "," instead of the "."
Do I have to change my countrie setting to change that or where can i change that?
I guess that this could be the problem...
Thanx again!

There should be a item in control panel called regional settings or language settings. You can use that to change your decimal and thousands separators. Might be called something different depending on your windows version, but it will be in control panel.

Yes, on my XP Home PC it is in Control Panel > Regional & Language Options > Customize > Decimal symbol - hope that helps...

That means I can now adjust it to my wishes finally again !!!
Thanx Minwah and shadowdrak for ur wonderfull and right-on-th-point-help!

mame32 always resets the configuration now like using a joystick/Nobezels,backart...
Any solution to that problem?
Thanx!

Sorry for raising this from the dead, but I was puttering around and decided to check this out, as I finally found a link for it....I won't post it, as my experience with their site and the forums there was a polar opposite of this forum. I'd prefer to promote the developers who haunt these boards, as they are far more civil (EVEN YOU, HOWARD :o ;) ) than the troglodytes they have.
I haven't even DL'ed their software, nor shall I, due to the responses to some of the questions posted there. Not only are the developers here not charging for their product, but they are more than willing to help (and quickly!), do so with a cheerful attitude towards "customers", and share frustrations with the community, rather than blame others for problems with the software they've coded. In addition, if they are NOT available for assistance, many others are more than willing to jump in to HELP OUT, I feel in part due to the attitude of the developers.
I think a sticky with the various FE's listed (ala Juke programs sticky) would be appreciated by all, with some reviews too.

The answer is MAMEwah.
- Easy to configure.
- Easy to customize.
- Supports multiple emus.
And at least on the old version, has a cool setup utility available that makes it great for a newer user.
