Title: Idea for game frontend- MP3 playback
Post by: sonicflood on September 07, 2004, 08:02:27 pm
I thought this would be cool and had not heard of it before.

Integrate jukebox/MP3 player to play MP3's from the same year as the game that you are playing.  That would be cool to listen to music from the same year as the year that the game was released! :)

There must be a year field somewhere in the ROM's that could be used for the macro to start playlist(s).

Just an idea!

I've had ideas to do something similar.

but I was going to go with type.  So you could load all your music then pick by category which music goes with what games... So you don't get any Enya when playing a fighters...  Then have them randomly going while playing games

but I love the idea of doing it by year.  But I dont' believe I have that info for most of my mp3s.

Anyway a nice idea thats being pushed back as other features are being added to my frontend.

The year is contained in the ID3 tags.  There is a v1 and a v2 (v = version).  If your MP3's don't have it, you can update them in most player software like Musicmatch.

How about a frontend that allows you to choose between running your games (MAME, etc.), an MP3/Jukebox or your PC?? That'd be excellent, that way I wouldn't have to go to windows, just a cool looking frontend!

It's a horrible idea.  A good jukebox and a good fe are two diferent things.  To slap them both together in a single program results in a average fe with an average jukebox.  (Sacrifices have to be made for both functions.) This just isn't in theory, but in practice.  There have been a few fes that have tried this idea... the reason you don't remember them is because, well as I said, they resulted in merely average fes or the jukebox element was so limited that nobody used it.

For the record any decent fe should allow you to launch a jukebox program so I'm not sure what you meant by that last comment.
