Post by: the3eyedblindman on September 05, 2004, 11:42:08 am
Anyone willing to sell a copy of windows 98 SE, I want my cab to run this so i can run older pc games on it. Name a price, maybe we can work somethin out. I really would like 98 SE, but if anyone has 98 or ME post as well.

Um, no, you don't put Me on a cabinet. You shouldn't put me on anything period. It was the single most unstable windows release ever made.

You only think its fine!  ;D

If you already HAVE an Me computer then why are you asking to buy a disc for it? Use the copy you already have?

If you don't have a disc, then the install files are likely in C:\windows\options\cabs

burn the contents of that directory to a disc (inside a folder named cabs), or copy them to a formatted hard drive (inside a folder named cabs), boot the computer to dos from a boot disc.

From there if they are copied to the hard drive do this.
C:
cd cabs
setup

or if they are on CDROM
D:
cd cabs
setup

if D doesn't work then try E: (it will be E if you have two hard drives).

Window ME is junk, pretty much.   There are some people who will be able to run it and might not have a problem with it, but trust Paige and myself, it's junk.

Microsoft tried to make code changes in Me that they shouldn't have tried, trying to bring NT and 9x together as one based on the 9x platform, but then scrapping that idea when things just plain wouldn't work right.  So they cobbled together what they had and called it Windows Millenium....  It's unstable if you try to do anything more than play an occasional game and surf the web.  If you install Office, and not much more you'll be ok, but start installing other stuff and you're hosed, maybe not the first time, but you will be hosed....

Windows 98 SE is much more stable, XP is even more stable than that.....  (not mentioning NT4.0 and 2000... that's another discussion)

Here's another strong vote against Windows ME.  As has been said, you may be able to get away with running it sans problems, but any computer tech will tell you it's just a matter of time.  ME is far and away the buggiest crappiest version of Windows ever released.  The fact that it even was released is a travesty.

Windows ME is the most random of all the Windows versions. Some people, myself included, have used ME extensively on multiple computers with absolutely no problems. On the other hand, many people have had nothing but problems with the OS. Given the choice, it would probably be safer to just do a 98 SE install.
