You could check out some of the home built CNC router these guys build.  A crane mechanism would be very similar (although you may not need it to be as heavy duty) in that it needs to travel along x and y axis with the added ability to drop a claw along a z axis.

Are there any auctions in your area? There are always crane machines at the auctions around here, and they tend to go cheap.
