Title: Definitive 4-way vertical list.
Post by: paigeoliver on August 31, 2004, 10:00:54 pm
I haven't posted this list in over a year, so I figured I would post it again, as I am sure some people will need it.

Here. I already did this a while back. I checked them all myself, due to all the misinformation in sort info. This is good as of 18 months ago. This is Originals only, (with nrallyv added), with all games with non-working sound, or other major problems removed (also removed Crazy Kong and a couple  other crap "original" clones). So here it is, 4-way and 2-way vertical master list.

My wife found and loves "Herbie at the Olympics' on my vertical 4way pac cab.

...sigh...

Anyway, klov says "orientation:  horizontal" but the screenshots appear vertical.  Any idea if its H or V?  It seems to look okay on the vertical monitor.

Hmmm, I wonder how that missed my list? Possibly because it is a clone.

Funny you would mention that game, I have an NOS artwork kit for it on my wall. Looks like they let a 12 year old draw it.

Some games are listed by mame with the wrong orientation, ie some games are taller than they are wide, but are listed as 'horizontal'.

Not sure why this is?

If I wanted to build a dedicated machine for just these games I'm guessing the PC wouldn't need a particularly strong processor, right? What's the worst machine that would still play all these games properly?

Also, where could I find a complete list of all full-working vertical games? (not just 4-ways and 2-ways)

How about Pit'N'Run? One of my faves at the arcade as a little kid. I remember it was added to Mame about 6 months or so ago, it didn't have correct sound though. If they've fixed it now (I think it's 4 way) it's gotta go in. This was a pretty common game where I'm from, I'm always surprised I don't hear too much about it now.

My machine for these has a 300 mhz, one has a really old version of mame (not sure of what version, but it is back when it showed both keys and joysticks as separate categories in the tab screen) and the other has .60

Take a look here:
http://mame.joymonkey.com/vlist.html

I haven't updated it in a while, but it's all the games from .77 that listinfo said were vertical.

If I am building a CP to play only 4-way games how many action buttons should I include so I can play them all (or most of them anyway)?  Would 6 be overkill?  By 'action' buttons I mean the ones used during gameplay, not player 1/2 start, insert coin, pause, exit, etc...  Most of the mini-cabs I see have 3-4 buttons on them... Thanks!

I went through this with my pac man cab I built, I think the only games that use 3 or 4 buttons are not popular games, and few at that.  I put 2 buttons on my cab, and haven't even installed any games that use more that 1!

I believe that Tutankham is also a vertical 4-way game. It is listed in KLOV as an 8-way game but the Stern schematic lists it as a 4-way. The real game also had a  2-way joystick to move left and right and a Flash button but MAME lists this as 3 buttons instead.

Thanks for the list Paige.

There's also Tetris (Cocktail set 1) (http://caesar.logiqx.com/html/emus/multi/mame/atetcktl.shtml) - one of the best two player cocktail games around too!

Tetris cocktail is the only game I have found that really uses the cocktail cabinet at its best and makes for some great two player fun..

does anyone know of a list of cocktail cabinet games..?

This fourm should do a thorough clensing of the info in mame.  I found out how horrible it is this weekend trying to set up a front end.

I was looking for 2 way (left/right) joystick games.  One in partiular, SpaceFever by Nintendo.  It's listed as a 8way game!!

Found numerous similar problems like this.  It's almost llike you have to go in and test each game out for all the properties of number of buttons, type of input, orientation/etc..

Even writing a grep to interogate the input controls (this game) info and video resolution it uses to regen the attributes for the type of game it is would be more accurate than the current flags it seems.
