Oh great! Now where am I get all those crappy, bug-filled, obviously-rushed games? Oh wait, I know, Atari (f/k/a Infogrames)!

Laugh at me.... I bought ten shares of acclaim at $18.... :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

And they wonder why they went bankrupt

It's always a sad thing when a classic videogame company goes bankrupt. Fortunately, Acclaim was not a classic videogame company.
Feel bad for the employees, but that is it. Good to see them finally go, even if it is about 6 years overdue.
-
It really was just a matter of time...
sad to see them go though...
-
I think the beginning of the end started when Acclaim stopped publishing games for Taito.

Did acclaim ever actually have a good game?

At my last job we enjoyed network games of Re-volt (the RC racing game)

Yes - All Star Baseball. Back in the N-64 days that series was the best... but then it all went to crap the past few years.

I turned down a job as a game tester for Acclaim (The are on Long Island, NY) about 6 years ago. They wanted to pay $7 per hour... I sounded and looked like a really cool job but it really had no future. I guess I made the right choice.

We must have tried out at the same time, because I turned down the same job around 6 years ago too. I got it but they wanted me for some pretty insane hours (7AM Saturday!!) that I wasn't able to do because of prior comittments (sister's wedding). That, and when I saw some of the other employees, they looked as if someone was chaining them to their desks in a dark room, feeding them gruel, and whipping them for complaining about the quality of those godawful South Park games.
Yeah, so it's a good thing I didn't take the job either. I'd be unemployed right now.
As an aside, did Acclaim actually put their testers to good use? Based on releases such as the Mortal Kombat Advance, I think not.

Acclaim had a few good games guys no need to whip a dead horse. The problem was with the extremely bad games. One of their biggest folies was to put out the game with the Olsen Twins and botch the contract leaving themselves open to be sued by the richest minors ever. I am always sad to video game company go but maybe someone will scoop them up and do something good with them.

Yea, I think the only good games I remember the Acclaim stamp being on is NBA Jam, Re-Volt, and the RC Pro Ams...

Turok was a good game for a couple months before Goldeneye came out. Then people suddenly realized that it really wasn't that good.
-
Turok 3 was a phenomenal game by any measure.

ur joking right? ^^^

Oh...whoops. Not Joking, just mistaken. I went out and pulled out my N64 games and it's actually Turok 2 that I was talking about. I've never even played Turok 3.
-
I am actually a huge fan of the entire Turok series. The first was awesome and the second was good as well. The "third" was actually Turok: Rage Wars and was like unreal tournament. Possibly had more fun playing that with my friends than Goldeneye, it is really close though. The actual third was Turok: Shadows of Oblivian and that was again a solid FPS. The Next Gen game was Turok:Evolution and I don't know why it got canned like it did, I enjoyed it alot. I really hope somone picks up the Turok franchise.

I like(d) Crazy Taxi, but that's probably not really a game to mention here.

Aye, twas a good game.
and yes I had fun with Turok 2 aswell. one of my first Computer games (That I owned, not played).

Crazy Taxi was Sega. Acclaim just distributed it for other systems except the Dreamcast (this was before Sega abondoned hardware and became a third party developer).
But yes they didn't screw it up.

Acclaim was most famous for their wrestling games. Every wrestling game they turned out was pure gold (at the time at least). Since acclaim lost it's contract with the WWE about midway through the n64's run, wrestling games took a major hit and are just now catching up graphically to what they used to look like when acclaim had the reigns. Yes, we are on a whole new generation of consoles, but once you take away the gourand shading from the current models they are barely as good as the ones on WWF Attitude. Crapfests like aki and anchor currently have the liscense and after their 5th or 6th game they are getting it right.
Acclaim also produced the console ports of the original mortal kombat and I believe the sequel. Yes they are midway games, but without acclaims financial backing they would have never made it to home consoles. (At this time midway was about to go under. So in a round about way acclaim saved midway along with mortal kombat.)
They are most recently know for ruining the star trek franchise, although that is a falsehood and their two "Elite Force" fps were quite good.
And then there are the slew of other titles already mentioned in this thread.
My point is if you think acclaim is a bad company then you must be too young to remember gaming in the early 90's. Acclaim ruled the market and were a great company. They were the kings of taking a sports or movie liscense and actually making a good game out of it (something we can't even do today.) Remember the batman and batman returns beat-em-ups? They made those.
Acclaims ONLY fault ironically is their dedication to quality. In the mid-90's various liscenses got fed up with acclaim for taking to long to produce their (insert name of celebrity liscense here) game. The liscenses soon stopped coming except for the really bad ones, which demanded a near-impossible turn around. This resulted in the one thing that acclaim never wanted.... rushed, crappy games. When acclaim resurfaced on the pc market a few years back this trend continued.
So don't blame acclaim for the horrible Olsen Twins game, blame Mary Kate and Ashely and their inability to understand a GOOD concept for a game and how long it takes to make a bad concept into a good game. Don't blame acclaim for that slew of bad star trek games, blame paramont, who demands a "fresh new look" (read as new game engine) for each game and a year turn-around, which is impossible if you want to give the star trek franchise the true "nerd-like" attention to detail it deserves.
In the future, don't be so quick to judge.

I thank Acclaim for porting Mortal Kombat II to the SNES for me. Without them I would have never been able to fight Smoke in the comforts of my home.
