Title: Universal Arcade (pelican) xbox to pc help
Post by: synapse on August 27, 2004, 05:36:33 pm
I've posted this in consoles as well, but I'm not sure which is the correct forum for this question, so a mod can delete wichever thread may not fit...

Well, first post here, (have read for awhile, but now I have a problem): Trying to wire up a Pelican Universal arcade stick to my pc via the xbox controller out, so i cut through the wires. Only problem is, they don't match up to the usb cable (typicaly the wires in an xbox controller are the same green red black yellow white as usb cables). So now I'm stuck with red with white stripe, red, pink and black, and extra few wires on the side with no sheilding (assumign these are grounding cables).

So, what to wire to what?

While I'm sure this is possible, (I'm not aware of it myself), can I ask why you didn't just spend a few bux for an xbox to pc adapter if all you want to do is interface that joystick to the PC?

All the adapters use the middle slpit section of the xbox controllers, instead of the main plug that actualy goes into the xbox (the extension part of the controller cable), and the Universal arcade only has uses this as well, no middle spliter.

I figured it out though after playing around a bit with the connections. Works swell.

I just hacked off a breakaway end from an xbox controller and a cheap USB cable... then wired them together.  Works fine, but I can't get my Red Octane dance pad to work on it.

Here is a cut-n-paste of my reply from the consoles thread. This one seems to be the one getting more attention, so...

I ran into the same thing when attatching a breakaway cable to my MadCatz Universal Racing Wheel. I used a multimeter to figure out what wire corresponded to which contact on the removed head. By doing this I was able to figure out which color equaled the color of the standard connection.

Without a multimeter, I am not sure how you would go about doing this. It sounds like the exact same colors wires I ran into, so it could be that they are another standard, and can matched up with resources through a google.

I wish you would have posted you were going to do this, or if you did, that I had seen it. I recommend not moddifying the actual cable that connects to the controller, but rather the breakaway cables. If the controller doesn't have a breakaway cable such as this, then I recommend going and buying this extension cable.

It has both a breakway attatchment and a standard jack (like the one actually found on the Xbox). This is what I used, and it was the standard easy color match mod that one would hope for.
