Title: Anyone ever see any plans like this commercial driving cabinet?
Post by: Xynie on August 24, 2004, 02:35:50 pm
I am still in the market to build a driving cabinet, I just don't know if I want to go with an enclosed cabinet or an open one.  I am starting to lean more towards an open one due to space.

I ran accross this site, which has some nice pictures and dimensions of a retail Tokyo Cop cabinet.

http://www.epooltable.com/tokyo_cop_arcade_game.htm

I wonder if anyone has seen any plans similar to this, or if I am going to have to open up visio and try and make something my untalented self :)

Thanks
Anthony

No...I have only seen about 4 or 5 sit down cabinets here.

There was a nice open-air driving cab in the projects forum a couple months back.  Another link that might give you some inspiration: http://www.customarcades.com/roadragegallery.htm

Spend some time and design something uniquely yours.  You'll not regret it.

Couldn't you like get an old, say, Outrun cab, rewire the steering wheel to a spinner input on an I-Pac and do the same thing?  Is that even possible?

I'm not advocating its purchase. :)  Just showing to give you some design ideas.

Hmm... I was looking at the second picture on the link given in the first post when I relised that it looks just like a normal cab with a seat!

I have seen peoples' cabs that have a steering wheel mounted in that exact place. All you would have to do is create a seat to pull up to the cab and put the pedals further into the machine. Also, you would maybe need to create some way of tilting the monitor to level.

I am with...except on the monitor.  Sure its doable, but not authentic to the expierence...these machines were made to accomodate an average amount of the gameplaying audience.  To make the monitor adjustable seems overkill.  If you can't see the screen, your probably to small.  Tell your guests to ball up their jacket and sit on it.

Oh, sorry, that's not what I meant. I was talking about making an adaptable cab. Almost all standard cabs have there monitors tilted backwards so you can see them easily when the are standing at the cab. But on a driving cab you are sitting and the monitor is level to the ground.

So, to be able to pull up a racing seat like I was saying you would need to tilt the monitor to level (out of standard cab mode and more like real racing cabs).

Then once you got that sorted out all you would have to do is position a wheel onto the front of your cab (like on Pole Position) and recess the pedals further in (most driving cabs have the pedals quite a bit under the monitor. This would be very easy to replicate

Edit: BTW, I'm 6' tall. I tend to run into the problem of the seat not going back far enough. ;)
