Title: To Many Roms, need some advice on the overload
Post by: roybfr on August 23, 2004, 04:34:00 pm
About got my cab and cp finished so I started getting the computer ready to do. I got a set of DVD's from a burner and copied all the roms, art, ect. Installed MameWah, got a nice layout going and tested things out and am ready to roll with the excetion of one thing......too many roms, not for MameWah but for me. So what is the best way to start pairing things down? I can create a list in MameWah, or am I better off just taking the time and start walking throught the list and writing down what I want to keep and what needs to go. I have also looked into a few rom managers but I am not sure if that is the way to go.

I created the following filters:

All Games
4 Way
8 Way
Driving Games
Fighter Games
Sport Games
Neo Geo

And I bunch of other filters I can't remember.

Ok one other thing, just so I don't get told to seach (which I probably deserve) I am doing a little more reading and I am guessing that I need to just make a DAT file using ClrMame Pro.

Are the filters done in MameWah? Sorry of the noob question.

Yes the filters are created/applied through MAMEWAH.

You'll need to select a list other than main list, then go the the filter options. I'm pretty sure the mamewah readme covers it.

My suggestion would be to have the games that you *know* you like on the cabinet, and just those games.  As you find others that you like, you can add them in.  I mean, who wants to wade thru a list of 5018 games?

Getting rid of clones almost halves the no. games...

I personally then get rid of quiz games, mahjong, unplayable, 'preliminary' drivers, any I can't play properly with my controls etc.  Also Playchoice10 & Deco Cassette games (quite a few there)...

But as Peale says, ultimately, you only need the games you know and love :)

That is kind of what I want to do, get rid of the fluf and extra versions. I think that I will just find a list of the Roms and throw it into excel then go through there and mark what I want to keep, then use the list to clear up my rom files.

I need to look through some of the tutorials a little more. I have just been a little brain dead after working on the cab and cp so much lately.

I prefer favorites and categories lists without actually removing any roms. Most people that visit want to play robotron and tempest, but it's nice to have a whole set (or whole set - mahjong) for the folks that want to play some obscure games.

Agreed.... deleting is bad, filtering is good.  :)

Yep.  When I say 'getting rid of', I mean using filters, rather than just deleting...

I was just going to move them to another folder but will give filters a whirl first. At first glace the filters seemed to be more of a game type, where I am looking for something more personalized, which I think that I can do.

I don't know about that. I've found a lot of games that I had never heard of that are really cool.

I also would create a "Favorites" category, but that's just me. :)

Other categories I have are, Vector, Puzzle, 4 player, and "Classics" which has games like Pac-Man, Tron, Q-Bert, Dig Dug, Asteroids, etc which didn't have a filter, I had to add the games manually.

Also, I have a seperate list with "EVERY" availiable game on the cab, and another with "ALL" games which has the adult titles filtered out for the kiddies. :)

What I did was Main List (everything including clones), Main List without clones (drops the list down to 2000 or so), then a Favorites list (where I spent 2 hours just going through the No Clones list and hit "z" to add each particular game I wanted to my favorites list.).  After that I did driving games, fighting games, etc. for when I was in a genre mood.

When you say you hit "Z" what program are you using?

Mamewah I'd say.
