Title: BYO Gameshow Idea, need guidance
Post by: NoBonus on August 23, 2004, 11:46:30 am
I want to build my own gameshow to play at home.  Here is the idea: A name that tune/Jeopardy mix game.

Two or three contestants seated or standing in any room with host at computer monitor. Each contestant holds a push button (I will use the design or similar submitted in earlier posts for the buzzer).  A random song plays from a selected folder of songs.  Player pushes button, song stops.  Host judges answer.  Correct answer gets 100 points and on to the next song, wrong answer 100 points deducted and same song starts over for other player(s).  Initially, since I know nothing of how to create even the most basic of programs, the host can control a simple audio jukebox with a randomized playlist and keep track of scores on paper. But is there a program to show who buzzed in first?  This idea could become more elaborate and expanded, but I think a basic, simple to put together version would suit me best as I do not have the technical programming know how to create anything!

You can see how this could be improved with automated scoring, certain songs being worth more points and so on...

Any thoughts/feedback/suggestions?

I've seen a program that let you build your own game show program, with timers, etc.

I think it's called "Game show builder"

I went to a business conference and they used it for a goofy/fun contest during lunch.

Check out the "You Don't Know Jack" game show controllers at http://www.wrongcrowd.com/arcade/... Those plus the YDKJ game might be a good starting point...

I always wanted to build my own giant $xx,xxx Pyramid set.  It's a fun game at parties but the home and computer versions are flawed.  Always a dream, never a reality.  Dick Clark is prohibitively expensive too.   Also suggested to me was building a large replica of the Price is Right wheel.

Okay my post was totally Floyd so I best redeem myself

But yeah, YDKJ is fun at parties, or at least it would be if everyone wasn't so cramped around a computer (and I don't like the PS version all that much).  If you can display the game on a large screen and make three seperate pedestals with a buzzer key, a screw key, a 1, 2, 3, 4 and a mini keyboard that would be cool.

But I really do not have any desire to play YDKJ. It requires too much (giant monitor, etc).  I guess if I wired each buzzer to a single keyboard key and opened a text viewer program, that would show me who buzzed in first.  I would then just need to be sure to pause the music similtaniously.  I wonder, I bet you could make the button press two keyboard keys, one for the buzzer and one to pause the music.  The trick would be having an MP3 player that always "stayed on top" and that had a separate pause and play button or a way to configure them differently.  Any ideas on an mp3 player with a way to configure a different pause and play button?

I played YDKJ when it first came out on a 486 and a 14" vga monitor.  WITH THREE FRIENDS!

I understand it CAN be played on any monitor, if you don't mind huddling together...  I want to play a game with comfortable distances between opponents; also, the game I have in mind would be hosted by me with no need for a GUI for the players.
