Title: Website redesign - WIP
Post by: saint on August 22, 2004, 09:21:04 pm
This one is for people to discuss/show any designs they are working on (if any!), for comment/discussion.

I love the layout ideas based at Video Game Directors Cut www.videgamedc.com (http://www.videgamedc.com).  WARNING!  Music will be played and you will be prompted to install software.  just hit No and Cancel and you will be fine.  Each day the site has a different theme to it.

I know others have done this too, but I have bookmarked the forums instead of the actual site due to the fact that the frames of yesteryear bug the hell out of me.

I may contact a friend to hook me up with a classic gaming style web design.  I cannot promise anything, but hes into everything we've been discussing.

Hmm... it took me to one of those useless generic automatically generated search pages.

Thats what was so awesome about it man.  Its so simple..... yeah no.  I screwed up that link.  Sorry about that.  It was supposed to be www.videogamedc.com (http://www.videogamedc.com)

Wow... WAY too many images on that page.  The page layout itself renders very fast... but the images... yikes.  Took .01 seconds for the page layout to render and 10 seconds for the images to finish catching up :)

hehe... and I'm not even gonna say anything about the ear popping techno music that begins blasting through my speakers when the page loaded....

I totally agree with your remarks.  The specific things that I like are the scanline styled layout, the quick loading, and the link bar on the left.  Of course the fact that it is video game related is a major plus.

Way too cluttered. Difficult to find any information. Too many varying graphics, which makes it hard to tell the information links from the ads.

Load speed is key to any great webpage. That happens to be one reason google gained such popularity. People used to talk about their speed before they were talking about the ability of their searches. But, now the other search sites have sped up their load times as well. Look also at Yahoo versus any other portal site, minimal graphics, maximum load speed.

I vote for simple, highly optimized images used sparingly, with a soft color scheme (sorta like the forum).  This will save saint bandwith costs on each page he serves, pages will load faster, render faster (especially on older computers, or computers with a sucky video card like mine), and be compatable with the most browsers.  Not really a fan of the graphic-heavy websites myself.

Update... like the last, this is @ 800x600, so you'll have to view the image externally to see it properly! Feedback most welcome  ;D

I *might* be able to help you.  I can work with PHP if you need like a webmaster or something of that nature, although I am not good with graphics at all, so a seperate graphics designer would be needed.

Thats a really nice clean design, but I think it needs a little more arcade controls in the header section. That logo is sweet, but I thought Saint would want to go with the old BYOAC logo (http://www.zazzle.com/contributors/products/gallery/browse_results.asp?cid=238126954769916370&general%5Fcategory%5Fid=196202710160457145) (by Frostillicus, so I'd imagine you'd need his permission)- the one from the t-shirts and book.

EB i like your design, but that red button should be changed to an arcade button.

The interface on this site is pretty good. I think it is drupal  Im a member and the great thing about it is that you can easily put your own content up.
