Title: Way to break into coin mechanism lock?
Post by: Sir Auros on August 19, 2004, 03:41:56 am
I got my cabinet from a friend and while he had the keys for the back and for the coindoor, he lost the keys to open up the mechanism that accepts coins. Is there any good way to get into it without calling a locksmith? Or, more importantly, is there any reason I would really need to open that lock if I have (cramped) access to the mechanism from inside the cabinet?

If you can get to the coin mech from the back, you should be able to use a screwdriver to take the cam off the lock and then you can open the door and put in a new lock!!

When I got my cabinet, I had no keys for any of the 3.

Unfortunately, this meant drilling out the locks, and I'm waiting for replacement barrel locks to arrive.

I decided to drill the mech lock too, because sods law, at some point you'll really need that open for some reason you can't fathom right now  ;)

Like the Dork said, you just need a screw driver to remove the screw that holds the "cam" on the lock. Now if you don't know what that is, the "cam" is the short metal bar on the lock that swivels 90' to lock and unlock the door. Once removed, the door will open.

Just watch out you don't shock yourself on the monitor!

those locks are really easy to pick.  If you're remotely interested in lock picking, now's the perfect time to buy a small set of picks.

Either that or you could drill out the locks, they are only made of cast white metal, easy to drill.  You only have to drill where the tumblers are, use like a 1/4" drill bit and you'll be golden.  You DON'T have to drill the whole 3/4" lock out, just a little bit around where you the key in.

You could remvove the cam (the arm thing on the back of the lock that moves when you turn the key) if you have access to the back of the door.
