windows doesn't ship with a dvd decoder.

You need to install either a software or hardware decoder to enable playback.  Hardware decoders would be a card you put in the system, while software decoders are included in dvd players like PowerDVD and WinDVD.  They can't just be downloaded though, they need to be purchased.  You might be able to get a demo however to get playback working, but it will probably only last 30 days or so.

Dude, if you're going to pay, go download NVDVD off of Nvidia's website.

http://www.nvidia.com/page/nvdvd_downloadtrial.html (http://www.nvidia.com/page/nvdvd_downloadtrial.html)

Or you can purchase and download PowerDVD from Cyberlink

Compusa/Circuit City/BestBuy will also carry various forms.

For what it's worth, not sure what version of Windows you're using, but I believe the latest Media Player 9.0 does have DVD support.

shows some that are demos, some that are shareware and at least one that is freeware.  Try them all to see what you like best before dropping your hard-earned cash down on it.

Question: Did you try to research the error at all?

I did a simple google of the message and there was a ton of links that answer this question for you.

I hate posts where people don't at least look for the answer themselves before asking. (not an attack, just a public service announcement).

If you just want a player, follow the other posts. If you're really serious about this, check out TheaterTek:

I'm not quite that serious (haven't had time to compare output on my HDTV). I use Media Player Classic and I think my codecs are from PowerDVD.
