I was watching Grosse Point Blank today and in the part where John Cusack goes into the convenience store, some teenager's playing a DOOM II arcade game. Does anyone know if this actually existed outside of the movie?
-
KLOV says it probly didn't go commerical

So who in the hell has the mock up?
-
It would be really easy to MAKE a dedicated Doom II cab.
The controls are very simple, as compared to more modern FPS games.
Doom II plays well with a joystick, unlike the FPS from Quake on, which really need a mouse.
-
Not a real game, but it would be SO CHEAP to make. Come on, Doom ran pretty sweet on like what, a 486?
-
Just think of the Multi game possiblilities...
DOOM/DOOM II/Dark Forces
Could be a chance for some cool artwork. Especially if you like all ot that funky demonic stuff...
How well do you think Dark Forces would play with the yoke? A Dual strike yoke I mean
Oh wait... A Duke Nukem Cab. Hail to the King
-
This thread has caused a new series of games to be added to my in-progress cab.
I'm not sure, but I think both Duke Nukem and Dark Forces use the mouse to look up/down, and wouldn't work very well, unfortunately.
You could run Zdoom or ZdoomGL and get higher resolutions if that's important to you.
This is just a cool idea.
-
New games added to my cab too. I have doom the Ultimite collectors edition and I never even though about putting it on my cab.
Im at work now and Ive already made my mamewah background and the layout file... Come on clock I want to go home..
-
Hey Walls,
Work on a Saturday night? That's just no fun.
I have the original Quake CD, which I believe comes
with full versions of just about any doom-related
game ever made.
Perhaps could you find it in your heart to post the mamewah
layout somewhere people who have no art skills could download it?
;D

Jeez...I don't even remember.
Do you have a track ball on the cp?
What was the lucas films game...Wild West or something like that? that was a first person shooter as well...

Having just played The Grid (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=G&game_id=8010 (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=G&game_id=8010)) the last time I was in Atlantic City, I think that a combination joystick/trackball would work well for most Doom-like games in an arcade machine.
-
Eric,
I don't plan on having a trackball... I just don't see being able to play doom worth the extra hundred bucks :)
Anyone who puts doom on their cabs, I would suggest getting the Legacy port of the doom source code. It enables 2 player split screen DM on 1 computer, which would probably be fun on a cabinet.
Just a matter of getting the controls set up comfortably...
Shoot, open, the four directions on the joystick, with 2 strafe buttons, and you're good to go I would think.
If nothign else, it's just another degree of novelty.
-
What was the lucas films game...Wild West or something like that? that was a first person shooter as
Outlaws (http://www.lucasarts.com/products/outlaws/default.htm) But it needs a mouse...don't remember why...its been so long
-
I just got DOOM set up on my cab and all you need is
UP
DOWN
LEFT
RIGHT
SHOOT
STRAFE
OPEN
ahh the good ole days
On another note..
OUTLAWS doesnt need a mouse, You can but you dont have to. It says on the webpage.

What about:
Heretic
Rise of the Triad
Blood
Chasm
I'm pretty sure the playing field was "level" thoughout and a mouse wasen't needed. Don't quote me though...it's been so long.
I really need to load these games back up. ::goes searching::
Bad News I loaded them up and they all have the look around mouse feature. Looks like you'll have to go really oldschool with Blake Stone and Wolfenstein.
-
I live in Grosse Pointe! How come I have never seen one of these ;D
-
Heretic was great!! I know you needed a mouse for that one because that is the first FPS that I recall you being able to fly in! If you got the wings that is. The other new and cool thing about that game was getting the egg and turning people into chickens!
-
Chook cannon rules!

It's a real shame that arcade manufacturers have ignored first person shooters. I think Doom would work very well in an arcade. People say that FPS games can only played properly with a keyboard and mouse but I'm not so sure. I think a trackball with buttons and/or a joystick would work just as well.
Games tend to be designed around the controls that are available on the hardware platform being used. All the early FPS games were originally designed for PCs but were then later ported to consoles. If FPS games had originally been designed for arcade machines or consoles and then ported to PCs then we'd probably regard playing them with a keyboard and mouse as unnatural.
Just a thought.

Chook cannon rules!
Ahahahaha, I forgot about that. Yes...yes it does!
-
i believe the major complaint with using trackballs in FPS games is that it is much more difficult to get quick movements very precise. try using a joystick/trackball against a guy with a keyboard/mouse in counterstrike and you can see what i mean..

Not true... I have seen many many FPS experts that used a trackball... and they totally owned everyone... I have no idea how they do it. Trackballs are difficult to get used to, but I guess once you get used to it, you can become VERY VERY good with FPS's with them according to the players I've seen.

I'm setting up for dual trackballs (CABAL rules!), do you have a link for that Doom port?

Love those joy handles if I ever saw a panel with a set of them I would say "nice rack"
they would look great on a Hooters themed cab. Anyways they are cool.
