Someone had a pacman cab that was a bar top. It was larger than a regular bar top but it looked really nice. I cannot remember where I saw it. When I find it I will post>

wow bishmasterb !!!!!!! that pac-man bar top is what I was thinking on making for my uncle. I was going to do something like that for his retirement (one year away so I got a little time) Do you have measurements you'd like to share? I wanted to make it dedicated just to pac man so when he tuns it on all he has to do is insert credit and go....can you dish out more details on this machine of yours?
-
Hey
Great links and info any plans???? available?
-
Here are some more pics of the Pac Man cabinet to give you an idea of the dimensions...

Another of the side...

Rear panel...

And finally the interior...

bishmasterb - what is inside the pac-man machine other than the monitor? How does the game run?

The PacMan cab is using the Jakks TV Games Pac Man PCB (which contains Pac Man, Galaxian, Rally X, Dig Dug, Bosconian).
Galaga is running with a Playstation and the Ms. Pac Cab has a PC running MAME32.
-
I see... you must have hacked the joystick and buttons so you could use real arcade controls...

Are you the dude selling these things on eBay for $250 or so?
No, you're not. Your mini cabs look a lot better. 8)
-
None of the above cabs is the on i saw. It was what I would call a large bar top. It had the same basic design as bishmasterb's but had a bigger and had a true arcade monitor. The guy had a site with multiple pic's, i just cannot remember where it was.
Bihs's cab looks really nice though.

Maybe the MiniPac Mk III (http://pacfan69.tripod.com/cabinets/id8.html)
Somehow it looks a bit skinny to me, but the sideview is just like a cutoff upright cab. Really nice.
-
I'm tempted to try and make one of these but I think for my first cab I want a tradtional upright... hmmm decisions, decisions...
-
I found it was a good test to improve (or rather start) my woodworking skills by first making a smaller test cab. I over shrunk it a bit (with a 12" mircrocab), but still I learnt a lot from it.

did you use something like this to do your pacman
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2696970
if so will it give you the option of vertical?
I bet I am wishing for to much.
-
Those are soooo cute.
Anybody ever try and sell one Ebay?

Yes, people tried and they were taken off since it's a copyright infringement to put the original artwork on them.

Yes, that's what I used (except I used the first edition from Jakks, the unit with PacMan instead of Ms. PacMan).
Unfortunately the hardware is extremely limited, no vertical display.
But, it boots up instantly, very easy to interface with (the solder points for controls are even labeled) and cost only $20.
The software isn't arcade-perfect, but it's pretty close.
-
Well, since you spend $20 on a near perfect.
Cant you get an epia fanless 800mhz or so for 100? And run all your classics with mame?
I REALLY want to build one of these... but I don't have a bar top to put it on... So I guess I should keep my standup...
but damn these things are cute.

Well, the benefits go way beyond the cost. For instance:
* It "boots up" instantly.
* It requires zero s/w configuration
* It doesn't confuse my 4 year old
* It never locks up; never blue screens; never gives any weird error messages
It's obviously not for all uses, but it works incredibly well for what it is.
** I still have two of these cabinets available (empty) if someone wants to add their own electronics. PM me. I'm near Sacramento, and would prefer not to have to go through the trouble of shipping it.
-
Whats the cost of these lil gems?
It's not too far of a drive.
-
I'd like $150 each.
They are painted (one black, one yellow), the black one has t-molding, they have all the lexan (marquee, monitor and cpo), barrel lock for rear door (not installed), cp drilled for 3 devices (but could be re-drilled), stand-off feet, power cord, recessed power switch wired into power cord.
-
If I can find a buyer for either the cocktail cab, control panel, or JAMMA cab I have for sale; before they are gone, I'm interested in at least one.

Does anyone know where I can find semi-detailed plans of the computer inside a bartop (or a site showing how to build your own "mini-computer")? I've never really dealt with one outside the case and I'm concerned with the space limitations I will have when constructing one of these... Thanks!

mini-itx.com is a great place to start

Bismasterb: Awesome cabs, I bought both the PacMan and MsPac Jakks toys with the idea of hacking them for a purpose like this. Do you have any pics of the insides of these things? Any advice on how to open it safely? How about power, using a DC converter? Sorry to hit you with all these questions, just wondering before I start so I don't make a damaging mistake.....Thanks!
-
That mini-Tron owns.
-
I may have been the guy on ebay you saw. It was never pulled by ebay, but it didn't sell either. Shipping was too expensive. $100+ just to ship. I hacked a Namco 5n1 and used a 13" TV. I plan on adding some detail about the hack on my webpage this weekend.

ok this first picture was sort of cheating but i made it to visualize a mini cabinet i was making using a salvaged tempest cabinet with HORRIBLE water damage.
i planned on putting in a 486 laptop i had running some old dos game because i wasn't sure mame would run on it.
here's a TERRIBLE photo of the finished project... actually wound up on display at an art show in California next to a piece created by industrial light and magic.
the side art was the best part of it because i was able to cut pieces of each side of the cabinet with the side art at a nice angle.
i have a photo somewhere i need to upload.
this thing was about 22 inches tall.
-
Ok so I need some info on the hack of the namco controllers ....so I decided to revive this thread
fatbasta or bishmasterb...can you help
Thanks

Thanks. I've got some pics at http://www.bishopzone.com/bishopzone/projects/tabletops/cabinets.html
Opening it is easy, just some phillips screws. As far as power, just a simple 6 volt DC power supply, I think I used a 600ma rated unit.

Your "electronics" link don't work.

Actually, the link works fine, I just haven't put anything on that page yet. :)

Any chance there are plans for those of us that are woodworking "idiots" ?

Hey, I resemble that remark! :)

A set of plans would be nice, but if you were't using the exact size t.v. you would still have to modify them some to make your bartop look nice....
I'm guessing those kitchen tile under the pac bartop of bishmasterb's are 4x4 or 6x6 that may help with a reference point as to how wide and deep it is....

Ok, I tried to hack a powersupply to the JAKKS pacman game. It's output is 300ma and I have it set to 6volt output. The video is washed out and pinkish....with a set of bars rolling through the screen (top to bottom). If I set the power down to 4.5 it improves the video but I still get the rolling pink bars (not as bad, but there). If I lower the power more the video starts to break up. I read somewhere online that on the circuit board is an something you can adjust for video, tried that but to no avail. Anyone who has done this have any suggestions? Where am I going wrong? I also think I burned out the power LED using 6 volts, it doesn't light any longer. Any input is appreciated. Thanks! (glad I started with the pacman and not Ms. PacMan!)
-
I just read this from bishmasterb:
" FYI
I've hacked several of the Jakks original Namco 5-in-1s, and each of them required that the power LED be kept in the circuit, don't throw it away just because you don't need/want a power LED. If it's not in the circuit the video becomes distorted.
For Power, just a simple 6volt DC power supply; I think I used a 600ma, which worked fine.
As others have stated, every solder point on the PCB is clearly labeled ("left,", "right", "fire", etc.) so it's pretty easy."
I'm guessing the burned out LED is just like removing the LED, meaning it is the cause of the video distortion.....
Any suggestions on how to fix it? Do I need a new LED? Wonder what caused it to burn out? Can I just "complete the circuit" somehow? Sorry for all the questions....

I'm ok with modifying plans to fit the tv (actually saw a nice 13" at wallyworld tonight for $60 that looked great).
I more need help with the sides and angles. My artistic ability is next to 0 so any help is appreciated.
-
BUMP in hopes that Bishop has decided to release the plans to the rest of us UN-handymen.

Too bad it didn't sell, I was thinking of making a unit very much like that.
Oh...404.

Ok, I tried to hack a powersupply to the JAKKS pacman game. It's output is 300ma and I have it set to 6volt output.
I'm guessing that you used one of those selectable voltage power adaptors. It's very important that you measure the voltage, with ANY adaptor. I've had ones that were supposed to be ~6V that were reading ten or HIGHER. So I finally found a 5V one that was putting out just about that much (actually about 5.1V IIRC) which works fine.
Remember that it's designed to have a slight voltage drop as the batteries start to wear, so 5V is acceptable. I wouldn't go much below that, of you'll exhibit graphics glitches.

Heh...okay.
AND FIX THAT 404!!!!!!11

Now you tell me! ::) ;) I think that's what blew out the LED in the first place. I would recommend anyone hacking the power supply of one of these units to start LOW and add voltage as necessary....don't make the mistake I made and start out with 6 thinking you're fine. I believe 5 would be enough, I think even 3 was working, but below that the graphics got funky. Seriously, thanks for the info Peale, you confirmed what I suspected.
