How many require more than 2 buttons? Is there anyway to look up this kind of information like some table or database somewhere?

Sortinfo is your answer:

Part of the answer to this is dependent on what you classify as a "4-way" game.
In addition to the REAL 4-way games, you have off-shoots like Defender/Stargate that need alot of additional buttons.
The actual number varies with how you set it up in preferences.
There are also simultaneous multiplayer games that were "button-only" in the arcades, but would lend themselves to play with joysticks for the left-right functions.
This list would include Space Duel, Eliminator, and Armor Attack.

The answer if you are talking about REAL 4-way game is 2, unless you want to play Mouse Trap, in which case it is 4.
I wouldn't recommend Stargate or Defender with a 4-way. Either use a real 2-way, or use an 8-way with the built in 8-way hack that I believe they just took out of Mame.

I tried that utility but that command doesn't work with the version of mame I had. I used another similar command but I don't think it liked the formatting in the file. I'll play around with it some more tonight. Great suggestions. And yeah on some of the games like Defender where I've seen it with the 2 way joystick and buttons I'd want to play that with either a 4 or 8 way. The arcade I played it at had it set up that way without the buttons so that's what I am used to. Was it like a hacked cab? I really don't remember so well as I was like 7 or something when I played it. Great suggestions though thanks people.
