Title: Anybody seen these Arcade signs before?
Post by: atog on August 12, 2004, 11:47:37 am
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13718&item=6111878181&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13718&item=6111878181&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW)

This guy obviously sells signs that he doesn't have the licensing to make, and they probably don't cost him much to manufacture, since they are all selling for .01 cent plus $33 shipping.

That being said, and leaving aside any issues of copyrights, anybody know anything about how nice these are?  I think it's kind of cool looking.

Yeah, there was a thread where some of the guys were considering doing this with their control panels.  I'd like to know what he's using for lighting... be it LED or cathode.

Well, since there's no reserve, and most of them don't sell... for $33 shipping someone could find out.

Or I could just email him and ask.   ;D  I may try that when I get home.

Checking the dimensions, those things seem pretty darn small.

I didnt buy this exact sign but one from the same person with a different design.

It cost $38.00 after shipping to Texas. It took about a week and a half to get to me.

It is just slightly larger than a piece of paper.

For the price, it is pretty good. Lights up nice.

How did you hang it?  Did it come with mounting holes or hardware?  What is the light source, bulb that can be replaced or led?

I've seen those in a local restaurant, only theirs had Bathroom "people" on one, and "Take Out" on the other.

Looks nice.

Note that it says it ships from Asia, so that penny probably pays for someone's monthly salary making these things. ;-)

I bought the pacman one on a whim about a week ago, waiting for it to arrive, but will be glad to take a picture of it when it gets here.

It hung with a chain that attached to the sides..

If you picture a neon exit sign over a door, thats about the size of it. The glass isnt that thick. I do not know if the lightbulb is interchangable.

For the price, it is a good little sign. You can still see the logo when the sign is turned off so that is a plus too.

I was scared to order it because it was from overseas and 30+ bucks shipping. But it came nicely packaged in styrafoam.

Just FYI: The reason the price is $0.01 and the shipping is high is so they can avoid eBay fees, which are calculated on the selling price, not including the shipping costs.

OK

The sign is made out of 5/16 " Thick plexi/Lexan material.  The clear plactic part measures 11 3/4" X ~ 7".  The light bulb housing adds about another 1 1/4" to the 7 ".  The light is a ~9" fluorescent tube.  It hangs by a chain that measures 1' 8".  There is no switch, it comes on when you plug it in.  The cord is about 2' 9".  I'll probably end up replacing the cord with something longer and maybe an inline switch.

Over all it is what I expected and I'm generally satisfied with it.

Here is a pic with the light on in the room (It is a somewhat dimly lit room with only one halogen in the middle of the room)

Here is a pic with the flash to show what the sign would look like in a room with a good amount of light.

One last pic with lights off at an angle below the sign.

I asked the guy about making custom signs, and he can't. I believe he's just a distributor.

I'd buy one if they had one that said 'ARCADE' or something equally less specific than "pac man"

if only I still had access to a CNC router, I could make those things all day long... and for cheaper.

Would it be hard to make one yourself with something like a dremel?
Title: Re:Anybody seen these Arcade signs before?
Post by: Nephus on August 27, 2004, 11:03:39 am
a dremel with the little router kit and an apropriate bit wouldn't be too rough... but you'd need a steady hand.  The CNC router I used to have access to was nothing more than a dremel knockoff stuck in this complex system of gears, pulleys, and cables.  It just had more precise control over the movement than a human hand would.  Not to mention being able to do it quite a bit faster.

I believe they make stencils for the dremel and router attachment that allow you to cut letters into wood, I would imagine you could do the same with plastic

Is that why people do that?  I used to hate it when people had ridiculus shipping prices and the item was selling for really low but it kinda makes sense now that you mention it.

its actually against ebay policy to do that..  it falls under their "fee avoidance" rules and you can actually file complaints against people for that..

My brother bought me the blue Atari one for my birthday.  I'm pretty impressed with it.  I hung it on my wall above my MAME and Pole Position II machines.  Looks pretty cool.
