Title: Windows XP: SP2..
Post by: JoeB on August 12, 2004, 10:27:13 am
Has anyone upgraded their MAME machine to SP2???

Have they noticed better performance, worst, MAME compatibility, DAPHNE, anything else?

Just wondering if I should stick with SP1 or switch to SP2.

I don't think it is going to make much of a difference.  Personally I always wait a little bit before downloading any Microsoft updates.  There will probably be a fix or two after SP2 has been out for a while.

Ditto.  Wait until SP2SP1 ;)  With such a major change as SP2 is, there's bound to be random problems.

IBM  is telling it's employee's not to install SP2. My company (PCtel) is telling us the same thing. There are compatibility problems they are trying to resolve with the software we're using.

Don't bother upgrading yet.  Especially on your Mame cabinet.  It's just not necessary for it.  If it's not broken, don't fix it.

Same story here.  I am not allowing any SP2 to be installed due to major compatibility issues.  We won't approve it on our SUS server to be deployed anywhere.

SP2 will lock down XP similar to the way that 2003 Server's security settings do.  The ICF actually blocks almost all port traffic and makes so many major changes that it all but cripples the computer for use.

Just my $.02

sp2 isn't even publically available to the home user yet. Turn on auto-update, when it's ready then it'll prompt you to install.  It isn't expected to be officially available yet for a few more weeks or less depending upon the issues they find.

On a somewhat related note, m$ has decided to aid the american eyeglass association by converting their windows update layout from the soothing off white it used to be into a blinding stark white and neon blue motif.  Way to go m$ you've managed to make your webspace even more offensive!!!

I must ask.
are your cabs hooked to the web? I do not have mine hooked to the internet.
I have 5 pc's in our home and the one hooked to the internet always gets messed up.
Each year I build a new pc , put the new one on the internet.
Reformat the old pc , do a clean install and dedicate the old pc to mame or give it  to one of my children.
No updates are installed. and thay work VERY WELL. Its always the one on the internet PC I have to reformat about every 3 or 4 months and do a fresh install

OOPS, I did have to install SP1 to the pc I use for my DVD back up PC ! SP1 was asked for whith Nero 6.0 and a plugin for it. I almost forgot about it.

Dvd platinum did not need it but DVD shrink uses nero to burn

sp2 will likely have similar fixes, it's not all security.  That's why I reccomend that everyone use it eventually, just don't get in any hurry.  ;)
