im making a lap controll pannel and i need to know what a sturdy but light kind of lumber i should use i want to add black spraypaint and clear over coatto finish it any sugestions?

Depends how big you make it. If it's small, you can probably use 1/4" masonite for the top, and maybe 1x6 ripped down to 4" for the sides. If it's big, then 3/8 in ply would work if it was braced well, 1/2 otherwise.
Mine uses 1/8 inch paneling for the bottom.

Lots of people (including me) like to use Medium Density Fiberboard for smaller projects. I use 3/4" or 5/8". Be sure to use a primer when you paint it or it will soak right into the stuff.
