Title: How do I set up this stupid QCast thing?
Post by: crashwg on August 02, 2004, 11:38:24 am
I just got Gameshark's MediaPlayer for PS2 powered by QCast and I can't get it to work for the life of me.

The way it's supposed to work is you install a program on the "server" pc and then pop the other disk into the PS2 which is networked with the server and you can play media from the server.

So I've got the server set up and working I think but when it comes to the PS2 it just won't cooperate.  It has a couple options DHCP or static IP.  I can't get it to work with either.  First I tried the DHCP since my Microsoft Wired Base Station supports it but the PS2 doesn't find the server.  Then I try static because I know the IP addresses of the server pc and the PS2 and still it doesn't find the server!

I have norton personal firewall, but I disabled norton alltogether, at the begining of all this mind you, so that shouldn't be the problem.

I'm not sure if it's worth mentioning, but when I went to upgrade my router with the latest firmware it gave me a warning saying that I had a software firewall active even though norton was completly disabled.

Are you running Windows XP? If so, you'll want to check to see if it is on.

Right click on your network connection and select properties then click on advanced tab. If it's on, you'll see it there.

Unless of course you have other software based firewalls such as Zone, etc...

If that doesnt fly, then you might consider using MSCONFIG to toggle off software apps at startup.

Hope it helps,

Thanks Gozur, that was the problem.  I didn't even know XP had it's own built in firewall.

Now my next question is this:
How do I open the port that this program wants to use?  It gives me the port number, but I have no idea as to how to allow it to use it on either the XP firewall nor the norton one.

The XP firewall from what I remember is not configurable per say. There may be some reg hacks to do this.

The norton firewall will have an option to scan software installed on the machine and allow you to configure it there. It has a rules / exclusion section as well.  Sorry not on a machine with Nortons / SYmantec atm.

I'm sure theres something in their FAQ about adding / adjusting rules.
