would it be possible to hack a regular microswitch joystick to usb? a non-analog joystick. this would just be for use with a desktop or of needed, another joystick for a cab. that way, you wouldn't need the space of a desktop controller, and wouldn't need to hacka keyboard or buy an ipac, etc.

Get a Logitech ActionPad and hack it to the D-pad, and your buttons to the buttons. Most games will recognize the D-pad as directional input except the games that will actually support it as a hat control.There's a "mode" button on the Action Pad that will explicitly make the D-Pad look like an analog control regardless of how the game wants to treat it (and the analog stick becomes the hat).

ok. actually what i was looking for was if there was a way to taake just a usb cable and attach the joystick to that.

No. USB stands for "Universal Serial Bus" and requires that devices have special circuitry so your computer knows what the hell is attached. How would it know if all you did was directly attach a microswitch joystick?
Follow the advice above, or make it a gameport joystick (in which case you can hack an old Gravis gamepad. I see them in thrift stores and garage sales all the time for $1).

i am doing ps2 hack and doing own controls... to get it to pc, im doing ps2 to pc connection.. (10 bucks)
so my case, i get duel use of sticks, pc (mame) and ps2 fighters...
