Photos of some of this stuff pre-auction (not today on-site) likely still up at:

Biggest disappointment?
2 actually - one being that I have no room for some of the larger games that went cheap - even though I didn't have a truck with me, I could have found a way to get one only to lug the machine back to Bloomington with absolutely no way to store it or even bring it into the house...
The main one though would be the lack of parts - for an amusement operator who is liquidating I figured there would be more than a box of 24 new joysticks (one lot), a box of old joysticks (my only buy of the day - $17 out the door - there were two Ikari-rotaries in there so wasn't bad at all), a small box of buttons, a bag of micro-switches,
two (three?) coindoors, some coin mechs, locks, 1 lot of marquees (8 to 12 wrapped so you were getting a mystery lot) - not much on the arcade part front (at least the basic stuff) - A few people probably scored some good monitors though but ultimately untested
One RGVAC'er there - maybe more - American Demon from these boards had to work in the morning and the other guy who was looking for help coming down from Chicago decided to skip this one - so I have no clue if any arcade controls folks were there at all...they can chime in if they so desire about their presence there and any scores they may have had.
Otherwise the usual mix of some regional operators, locals, bar/restaurant owners, folks for whom 1983 was the peak of fashion and hair styles, more than a few folks wearing tee-shirts proclaiming their favorite place to vacation in Florida, etc.
Right before the start maybe 200 people mulling about, dropped to about 100-ish fairly quickly and remained there for the rest of the day - still a lot for this small burg - expected fewer myself. Fair amount of kids - all pretty well behaved (and quiet too!)
Have most of the final bids here - ignored all the misc. pool stuff (cues, balls, etc)
Listed in auctioned order - these are the hammer prices - add 16% to 19% buyers premium/taxes (cash vs. everything else) for out the door totals.

he pretty much said F**k it, and let the others go too. Note that these *only* had maybe 5 or six classic games on them (think of the selection on those Atari or Namco joysticks you can buy in the store and hook up to your tv - that's what I'm talkin about...)
$1300
$1100
$1400
After witnessing this I understand why folks making crappy looking MAME machines and selling them through eBay/internet can charge what they do... I can only say as someone who hasn't been to an arcade auction in many years I was stunned - though apparently this is a common occurance...

I;ve never been to an auction, but I've noticed that prices posted seem to be comming down for the games that were bid up the last few years (mspac, etc..) but the lesser wanted games seem to be going up.
Wonder if it is the Mame effect now (vs the Ebay effect from 2000-2003).
My local "retailer" of off-route games still wants $1100 for anything with the letters PAC or GAL in it, even when I told him to check ebay and they were now in the $600-$800 range.

Damn man. Thanks for the report Pitfaller. I coulda cleaned house. I had 1200 in my pocket. Mental note, ask off for auctions even if not scheduled to work. I coulda been playing some pool today and some arcade games.

I would have liked to got my hands on one of those MVS-2 cabs. I went to an estate auction not too long ago. They had a small game room with a number of uprights, couple of cocktails and a couple of pins. Nothing went for below $300. I was hoping to walk away with something for about $250, but there was somebody there that thought anything under $300 was "giving them away". He walked away with 3 of them.

What a great auction! Most everything was going for dirt cheap prices.
I was lucky enough to walk away with four items.
A double opening coin door - $7.50
A box of 72 feet of rope lighting - $17.00
One upright empty video poker cabinet - $10.00 (this sucker is a spitting image of a Pac-Man) It should clean up nicely.
One somwhat empty MAME in progress NBA Jam TE conversion from Hit the Ice cab - $60.00. This includes a four player set-up with a 2 1/4" trackball, part of a coin door, bezel, marquee, and who knows what else inside. This should be a great four player sized cab if I ever get the urge to build it. This thing was/is DANG heavy though.
I was also bidding on the box of used joysticks, wanted those rotary sticks so badly. I'm glad they're going to a good home. Let me know if you want to unload one of them.
I do notice a ongoing trend at these auctions. The growth of the MAME cabinets being sold with ROMS. I don't have any issues with cabs being sold empty; but, to sell a cab that plays "a bunch of games" to an unsuspecting buyer who doesn't understand the potential legal issues is an issue. Especially if the buyer is planning on using the cab for profit. The whole issue with the cocktail cabs playing multiple games was disturbing. It was very smart from the sellers point of view to do because it drived up the prices; but, I worry about the purchaser who may be trying to make some money off of the cab.
Oh, well... it was a good time. I'm glad I didn't stick around for the pinball machines. I would've walked away with one of them.

arcade auctions have always sold bootleg and nonlicensed equipment. Go to the auction sometime and start looking inside the Ms. Pac machines there, you will see 4 bootleg boards for every original one.
What would happen if you brought a Mame cabinet to the auction with no roms? You would be lucky to get $100 for it.
-
Agreed. All those MAME machines at auctions, you must realize, have been and are likely to be soon again out on route. The coindoors were not there for "authenticity" - they were there to have people drop quarters in them.
Same thing with the slot machines, video poker machines, etc.
Not supposed to have them but bars (esp. rural ones) got them all over the place. That these sales and placements on route occur so openly should tell you how much law enforcement cares about this nickel/dime stuff (they *do* have better things to do).
Only with video poker do they occasionally clamp down when things get too blatant/common (i.e. they look the other way until too many places have too many machines and/or they start getting complaints) - it always perks back up again though - just my exp. in Wisconsin and Indiana...
Really wish I had room for the Jurassic Park Lost World shooting game... :(
