Title: Tank II (1974)
Post by: SirPeale on July 29, 2004, 08:17:01 pm
Lady about 150 miles from me emailed with this game up for grabs.  I don't have the room for it.  Any interest?

He's in Vermont, according to his user profile.

Dammit, why is all the good stuff so far away- isn't anybody else in CA, OR, or NV?

I used to have an original Tank and really enjoyed it.. It's the father of combat that EVERYBODY had for the 2600.

Go get a great little piece of history with that game.

Later,

Vancouver- You guys have some sweet fireworks stores.. I'm in Redding, but a couple years back a whole bunch of us rented a house in Manzanita over the 4th.  Everybody else cut over to the coast further south, but I drove all the way up to the Black Cat store.  My wife nearly divorced me when she found out how much money I spent in there!  It was worth it, though.. we had one sweet fireworks show on the beach that year!

There was no Tank II game at the house in Manzanita.  (who's off topic?  not me!)

Man, this moved off the main page quickly.

I'm guessing this game does not use ROM images, as it's not in Mame.  Discrete logic?

Same as my 1977 desert patrol I'm guessing (Although I don't know what it is, discrete logic or something else).  There doesn't seem to be much interest in the really really old non-emulated games.  Go figure... Desert patrol is quite cool actually. The gun even shakes when you shoot.  Like a real machine gun, well almost :-) Too bad the cabinet is in pretty rough shape and weighs about 1000 pounds I swear. it is the heaviest thing I ever moved three guys and we were struggling, couldn't get it down in the basement yet.  So it's sitting in the dining room.  Ouch! my wife isn't too happy about that, I wish I had a garage.  ahh well all in the name of saving some of the oldies, I'll get it inot the basement eventually.

Somebody needs to grab it and rescue it.  It's literally one of the rarest cabs of that era along with tank 1 for that matter.  Plus this is the version the wildly popular 2600 port was based off of.

Man, I want to.  Believe me, I want to.  It's fairly close.

Problem is I have *nowhere* to put it.  House is full, workshop @ my moms isn't, but that's where a couple of the cabinets here are going.

Where is it and what is she asking for it?  I live in Concord, NH so if it's semi-close I'll go get it.

I have definite interest... could you give me some more details?  If I could move it in my wife's Outback wagon, I'm there.

EDIT2:  info received, email sent to woman with the cab.

EDIT3:  So far, no response from owner.

YEAH, I still have to figure out when to pick it up (it's a 5 hour one way drive), but the woman has told me it's mine for the taking.

Rest assured it will be documented and restored to the best of my ability.  It may not be immediate as I'm working insane hours lately, but it will have a safe home with me.

Anyone have any idea how many of these were made or how many may still exist?

The Atari/Kee Tank games did a couple thousand units. I am fairly sure that OregonPacman on klov.com either has one now, or used to have one.

The thing about black and white games is that most of them are just GONE. I currently own non-vector black and white games and only one of them actually works (Stunt Cycle works, Maze, both Sprints, Atari Basketball, and Super Space Stranger are all non-working, as was my other Sprint and my old "Snake" game that I have since forgotten the name of. The thing about these black and white games is the boards and the power supplies, as those monitors are dead reliable. I have NEVER owned a black and white monitor that didn't work.

Have a 2600, but no Combat. Actually, I have the Sears branded version of the 2600, and that came with Air Sea Battle.

Back to B/W games and discrete logic etc. - these should be emulatable. Simulating discrete logic is pretty easy, especially if the thing is well clocked. I really want Death Race--used to play that lot. Maybe I should start working on MAME. I guess the real issue is getting the original schematic.

I just got home from Vermont... had to take the wife to Stowe for an overnight (with my mother watching the kids) so it would all go down.

I have the game in my station wagon.  It's in REMARKABLY good condition.  It's completely intact, no water damage at all, it's very dusty but even the artwork is completely intact.  In fact, some basic cleaning and new T molding and it will be in excellent shape.  I haven't tried to power it up yet, but everything inside also looked in excellent condition except for some rust on the power supply and it probably needs a new power cord since the plug is decayed to the point that I wouldn't trust it enough to walk away from it while powered.

Pics are forthcoming when I have the chance.

You only contacted Peale the day after I did, so it's not like I waited that long, just a little too long I guess.

Oh well, enjoy!

My time will come, and when it does I'm jumping on it!

Yeah, heh... sorry about that.  :)

I just got it into my basement, plugged it in... powered right up!  No game, though, just the screen and lights.  Definitely looks like everything is there so I'm guessing it's a dead fuse, maybe crappy contacts.  They said it hasn't been powered up in 20 years, so you could imagine all the stuff that needs some refreshing.

All my black and white cabinets power up too. First off, replace every electrolytic cap in the thing, especially the bigger ones. A lot of those 70s games had some big caps in them, and those caps are a minimum of 30 years old now and could possibly be up to 35 years old (depends on how much shelf time the caps saw before they were used).

Can't wait to see pics. I'm surprised you powered it up so soon. I usually vaccuum out the dead spiders and crap like that before trusting such an old machine.

I have a working 1976 Atari Dominos. Needs some aesthetic improvements, but it's a "quaint" little cab to have in a collection.

Dude, I drove from the corner of RI to the edge of Quebec and back for this thing... how could I not power it up right away?  :)

Do you need to replace them with the exact same size and specification?  Just curious if there is a thread on this already maybe... My desert combat 1977 works (mostly) but the screen rolls around a bit, more like a quick shaking in circles. Would replacing all the capacitors in this thing potientially clear it up?  There are 2 in it that are just massive in size as far as caps go I have never seen then this big before :-)  they don't appear to be attached to the monitor or don't look like they are part of the video, but they are on the main board that the other 3 come off of... here is a picture of the two caps. I bet they are 3 inches tall and at least 1.5 inches in diameter...

recap your monitor on the desert patrol, likely a common monitor and bob roberts probably stocks the cap kits.

It also wouldn't hurt to replace those giant caps either, get the same kinds.

Man, I wish I'd had the room for it.  After picking up the Space Attack (huge) and with the other projects I have I simply could not justify it without getting rid of something else.

Space Attack is pretty cool, too, though.  Big Thank You to you for pointing this out to me... this cab will definitely see some restoration and documentation.  I can't guarantee when, but it will happen.  :)

Just post some pictures already!!!!!!!!!1111

Easy!  I haven't posted any because I'm having an issue with my camera.  It's an older one, non USB, and the batteries in the floppy/smartcard adapter died so I can't get any pics from the camera to the PC at the moment.  The adapter batteries cost more than a smartcard USB drive would, so I ordered a smartcard reader from officemax (they had them for $5 on clearance).  That should arrive, according to them, tomorrow.  I can post some pictures tomorrow night if all goes as expected.

In the meantime, I'm not going to touch the cab, so that I can take pics of it in exactly the condition in which I received it.

How's that?

When you do get pics, don't forget to submit them to KLOV...

The pics that get submitted to KLOV will be of a clean machine, not the pics I submit here.  Unfortunately, even though officemax.com promised the delivery of the smartcard reader today, it did not arrive.  Maybe tomorrow.

Okay, OfficeMAX sucks.  I ordered on monday for '1 day delivery' and it arrives today.  That's a full business week.  Nice job dickwads.

Anyway, since I now have the media reader, here are the pics I promised:

First off, replace every electrolytic cap in the thing, especially the bigger ones.

Do you need to replace them with the exact same size and specification?

I believe the rule is that the capacitance rating has to be exactly the same and the voltage rating must be the same or higher (but NEVER lower).

Everything you could ever want to know about replacing capacitors...
