I'm thinking of upgrading from MAME 0.82 to 0.84 in the hopes it will take care of some sound issues I'm having. I'm hesitant because I don't want to lose any speed and my romset is for 0.82. I read something about the ctrlr files being absent in some builds of MAME0.84 but I'm not using any of those so I don't think that should affect me.
I'm planning on simply swapping the exe files. Should there be any problems with this?

So just rename your old mame.exe to mame.bak and put the new exe in. Unhappy? delete the new and rename the old.

Anything to look out for when upgrading from Mame 0.82 to 0.84?
well, theres those pesky monkeys, and the tornado's will get you...but other than that, that's all you have to watch out for. oh, and ugly chicks, watch out for that too.

They did take -listinfo out of MAME, so the current build of mamewah and some other tools need small workarounds to work properly.
-
Also if your front-end used --listinfo to get information instead of --listxml, you may have issues with 0.84... which only allows --listxml.
But hey, easy to find out, just do as directed above and keep your old executable around.

Loads of input stuff has been changed / broken in MAME v0.84, so personally I wouldn't upgrade yet. u1-5 fixes many things, but also breaks others.
I wish I hadn't moved from 0.83 to 0.84 to some extent, and I would recommend you wait until 0.85 at least...

Thanks for all the input fellas...
I did upgrade last night and as peale said I kept my 0.82.exe. I'll probably go back to it too. 0.84 didn't fix my sound problem. I have another thread devoted to the sound thing. I'll post there. THanks again.
