Title: Interesting coin door.
Post by: Witchboard on July 27, 2004, 09:32:44 am
I've personally never seen a coin door like this one.  Where would you get the mechs for it?

Hard to tell from the quality of the pics, but it looks like standard mechs will work in it. Pretty neat find.

Yes indeed it's an old Atari coin door that they used on their machines in 1978 and 1979. Early Asteroids games used it before Atari switched to the Coinco door during the production run.

Any standard coin mech fits this door.

I think I saw a door like that on a Space Invaders once, @ FunSpot.  It was either SI or a game near it.

Thanks for the replies.  I thought it looked pretty cool with the coin drops.  I've contacted the seller.  We'll see what happens.  ;D

I got one of these Asteroids coin doors for $12 on Ebay for my cab. I remember as a kid racking up credits with the string on a quarter trick on this type of door. I haven't tried it yet on my coin door yet.

With or without the mechs?  I'm picking this one up for $15 and he's local so I don't have to pay shipping.  Funny thing is, he lives right down the street from me.  ;D

Mine came with the mechs and was in great shape, no scratches or dents but I did have to buy a coin door lock from Peale. I also had to pay $14 for shipping, so $15 without the mechs is a good deal. When I was bidding on them on Ebay they were selling for $12 to $20 plus shipping.

Well, I just got home where I have some decent image tools.  You can see a larger image of the back here (http://members.cox.net/witchboard/junk/ataricd.jpg).  It's dusty, scratched and a little rusted, but no dents.  It should look pretty nice when cleaned up.  There's some interesting stuff on the back that I'm not sure what it's for, but I'll figure it out one step at a time.  If anybody has any pics of a complete coin door of this type (of the back), please share them.  ;D

Edit:  Nevermind.  I love KLOV.  ;D

I have a complete one, what do you need to know?

A few more factoids, this is the second (possibly 3rd) generation of Atari coin doors. I know Sprint 2 era machines used a huge coin door (width of a Midway door, and almost the height of an over/under). I've had 3 machines with that door. Then they switched to the door in this thread, it wasn't just Lunar Lander and earlu 'roids machines, everything back then had it (I have owned 2 machines with them), then they switched to the door that fit the same hole but had the push to reject buttons (had at least 5 of those), and then they switched to over/unders and stayed with them until the end (had countless number of those).

After looking at the service manual at KLOV, it looks like I may be missing more parts than I thought.  After I clean it up and check and see what all I'm needing.  At first glance, obviously I don't have coin mechs, but I'm also missing the anti-probe plate... whatever it's function.  It looks to go behind the lamp in between the coin slots to keep people knocking out the price plate and sticking stuff in there.  Won't be a concern for me.

Those are more complex than later doors (which got simple again when they changed to the more standard type), all of mine have had those magnetic lockouts that keep it from accepting coins with the power off.
