Title: FS/FT: Salvagable Pac-Man cab & vert monitor
Post by: megashock5 on July 26, 2004, 10:38:16 am
Hello,

I was started to convert this old Namco cab (a Galaga 3 that used to be a Pac-Man) for MAME, but yesterday I discovered that the original Pac-Man art is under the black paint they applied when switching it to Galaga 3. It looks like it's in pretty decent shape. I still need to get the paint off, but I got far enough to see that it's there and looks intact.

I also have the vertical monitor and it's chassis and I believe it still works.

I don't have the board, marquee, or bezel - and it doesn't have the correct control panel overlay (again, it was Galaga3 when I got it - and someone is interested in the G3 marquee and board).

I am not the right person to restore this correctly - I simply don't have the know-how. Is anyone interested in buying this to restore it the right way? I'd also be willing to trade for something like a 25" conversion cab or something suitable for MAME.

Otherwise I'm going to restore the side art but turn it into a MAME machine and put a new control panel on it.

Here's a shot of what I found of the arwork so far.

Mega: you might get more $ for it if you removed all the black paint first. Otherwise people feel it's risky, not knowing the condition of the art.

besides, if you remove it yourself and it turns out the art is ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- and no one buys it, you can still go ahead and MAME it.

If the rest of the art is as good as what he's uncovered, I beg you not to Mame it!

(But then again I am a HUGE pac-man collector with 8' x 7' x 1' book case wall displaying my collection, plus 2 machines)

My sad PacMan machine met it's match becomming an Arkanoid (snif snif).  I peeled off the 20 year old formica sides, and found that the converter took an orbital sander and scuffed up the entire cabinet before applying the contact cement (which is still on in a huge pink sheet and very hard to get off) to make it adhere better.  There is no saving my artwork, unlike this guys.

I'm in western MN, too far away from Ohio.  I'd GLADLY swap my cabinet for yours and let you mame it or let someone else do something with it, as it looks like your artwork is savable.

I just cant bring myself to sand down the sides....yet.

Guru,

That's the thing. I don't *want* to MAME it, but I want a MAME machine. I don't have the parts or the knowledge to restore this thing. So I'm looking for someone who wants to do it and who could give me an empty dynamo cab (or something suited for a 2-player MAME machine) so I can make what I want.

hmmmm... I live somewhat near you(I live near Akron, Ohio).  I have an empty cabinet that could possibly fit a 25" monitor in it.( I would need to measure it).  But you probably want it to already have the monitor.

It looks similar to a frogger.  I'm sure the control panel is wide enough for a 2 player street fighter setup(it's a couple inches wider than my other cabinet, which has a 2 player street fighter setup).  If you're interested at all, I can take some measurements.  I really wish I had more to offer, that pac cabinet would be sweet in my basement.

I also have other stuff, like computer stuff, joysticks, buttons, etc.

And you wouldn't have to worry about maming the cabinet I have, I was told it's definitely not worth restoring.

If you're interested at all, just send me a PM.
