Title: DOS MAME Sound Quality
Post by: Zapper on July 25, 2004, 10:15:48 pm
I have an old ISA ASound Gold AS007 sound card in my MAME cab, in pure DOS MAME it has a background hiss. In Windows 98 SE MAME runs fine with no hiss at all. Is background hiss normal for a pure DOS MAME/ISA sound card system? So far this is the only card I've found that will work in DOS MAME. The version of MAME is pretty old also, 1-1/2 years at least.

Does it have mixer software?  If so, make sure microphone, CD, and line inputs are muted ot at minimum volume...

I tested the sound outside of the cabinet, its pretty noisy even in Windows. I found the mixer software and muted the mic/cd/line but its still pretty noisy. I'll just turn down the volume and live with it untill I find a different card. I'd like to get an ArcadeVGA and get away from a DOS system.

Maybe it's the quality of the sound card.  Pick yourself up an ISA SoundBlaster 16 cheap somewhere...
