Title: Defender/Stargate Panel Help
Post by: salthegameman on July 23, 2004, 10:09:10 pm
Hiya,

I am new to this board but have been watching for a while my main reason for posting is my 2 favorite games Defender & Stargate. I want to build my own panels or combine the 2 since they are so similar but I need an exact layout of those panels.

Can someone either post the true layout I mean button spacing and so on? I would very much appreciate it.

Download the original overlays from here (http://localarcade.com/arcade_art/categories.php?cat_id=6&sessionid=b06f1a6ec4f29772aeabc83038aa124f).  They should make it real simple to measure

The multi-overlay is not exact on the spacing, specifically the reverse button isn't in exactly the same spot.

I wrote a tutorial on using a printed Stargate overlay as a cutting template here :

and

Also, if you are a Williams fan take a look at the multi overlay :

It's compatible with Stargate/Defender and many more games.

Dig it?

Excellent work on the tutorial but one question. In your tutorial you say ""open the control panel overlay image and resize it's width to match your control panel, and then manipulate it as you see fit""

I downloaded the graphic as you said but I don

Actually if you are sure on the whole Stargate/Defender thing then just order yourself a reproduction Stargate overlay and a new Stargate joystick from arcadeshop.com, and install them in whatever you wish.

Or, I DO have an entire Stargate panel (a Defender one as well), but me having them isn't going to help you much.

It NEEDS to be a Stargate overlay, as Defender doesn't have the inviso button. I made the mistake of choosing a Defender cabinet and thus can't play Stargate.

www.jakobud.com has the Defender and Stargate measurements, using his plans you could build exact replicas :)

paigeoliver,

I took your advice and ordered a stargate CPO from arcadeshop.com, just to be sure :-) one thing though they were out of stargate/defender joysticks and had no ETA. Can you tell me where else i can get an original/replica/2 way joystick for use with my panel?

BTW thanks a lot you guys are a great help!!!

I have one terrible original, and a few compatible ones, but I am not really sure where exactly they are (I have a lot of stuff).

Look for other 2-way joysticks on ebay, or you can rig an 8-way. If you are making your own panel it is fairly easy to use a different kind of 2-way than the original one.

The multi-overlay is not exact on the spacing, specifically the reverse button isn't in exactly the same spot.

I noticed that, what is your opinion on this?

(I installed a spinner on James Brown)

Probably a lot harder to reach, original layout had it much closer and used a shorter stick. My machine has the original layout, but with a larger Wico balltop (had to drill right THROUGH the base of the joystick to install the reverse button).

So, it CAN go in the right place, even if using the wrong stick, provided you are willing to drill one corner of the joystick base off, the plastic nut that holds the button on will also hold the joystick down (that, and the OTHER three joystick screws).

I just finished building my own Stargate/Defender controller and might have some insight into this.

First the pictures

The size of the controller was more to fit my MAME cabinet http://www.knightlymuse.com/arcadia/arcadia.htm
than for portability and storage. I could easily have made it about half as thick about 10 inches narrower much more laptop friendly.

I also forgot to add buttons (and button holes) for things like coin 1, coin 2 and Pause until I had already laminated the top.  Lucky for me the Control Panel Overlay and buttons covered up any nicks caused by drilling through the laminate.

A standard joystick base is too close to the reverse button.  I needed to saw off one of the corners in order to make it fit.  This was fairly easy and can be done with a hack saw or dremmel tool.

Speaking of joysticks I first tried a 2 way joystick from Happ Controls and it just didn
