Title: Games that require a spinner
Post by: Dougmeister on July 22, 2004, 04:45:36 pm
Tempest
Tron
Blasteroids
Arkanoid
Omega Race
Warlords
Major Havok
.
.
.

(my control panel is not even finished yet and I find myself contemplating adding more controls... I think I'm hooked :) )

Trying to decide between spinner and track ball 'cause I don't have room for both.  Please add to the list.  Thanks.

Remember your spinner can be used for most driving games as well. Personally if it's a choice you have to make I'd go for a spinner (Tempest, Arkanoid and Pole Position ).

Many/most spinner games can be played pretty well with a trackball, but no trackball games can be played with a spinner... but, having said that, I think you should try your damndest to have both (spinners have a very small footprint on a CP, and you COULD get one of the smaller trackballs...) - I'd say whichever one you decided to leave out, you'd miss terribly.

Ok, let's take it from a dif't perspective:

What's the CHEAPEST way to add a trackball?  I think TheNasty's deal is the cheapest way to get a spinner (without making one yourself).  I'm thinking find a cheapo trackball for a PC on eBay, Overstock, etc. and use it.  Thoughts?

Personally, I've never cared for the feel of those PC trackballs (you can't send 'em flying) - Ultimarc has a great price for a 2 1/4" trackball ($28 w/o interface and mounting plate).

cheers.

yeah, you can find those 2.25" trackballs for fairly cheap.  there are always good deals to be found on ebay or these forums.  personally, i wanted a stand-alone unit that i could incorporate into a cp while still being able to plug into my home pc to play games.  i got a wico command control trackball for about $10 on ebay, hacked an old mouse i had into it, dremelled it a bit to fit this neat ball i bought, and added some LEDs..

you can see the dragon better without the flash..  ;)

Does Peale still have some imperial trackballs left? I got one from him dirt cheap and it works great. I wouldn't do away with it for the world. It does take up a lot of space though. I also have a Tornado spinner which takes up almost no space under the panel, pretty pricey though.
