I tried searching here and at mame.net but to no avail. My double dragon 1, 2 & 3 all run sideways as though they were set to run on a vertical monitor. I've tried running it with no hwstretch but that doesn't fix it. This one just has me baffled. Any advice? Could it be the artwork bezel that mame puts around the screen?

Do you have artwork turned on?
Is the screen rotated?
-
I think I have artwork turned on because it surrounds the screen with an image of the original bezel. My Pac-man does this too.
The monitor is a horizontal monitor but the game image and the bezel both show up in a vertical orientation or sideways from where I'm sitting.
Thanks for trying to help me out! :)

When you say sideways do you mean the screen is rotated?
If so check your mame.ini file and make sure you didn't turn on ror or rol.
Or are you saying it looks vertical because there are black bars on the left and right side? If so this is because the artwork is not 4:3 ratio.

Yes both game screen and bezel are rotated sideways.

well then, like I said check your mame.ini file (are you using mame or mame32?) and see if you have rotate right (ror) or rotate left (rol) turned on.
-
I'm using mame v 0.82 with MAMEwah 0.97.
At the risk of sounding like an ass... If I had one of those options on wouldn't that rotate all my games? I know mamewah has an orientation option that will rotate games with 1:1 aspect ratios and I tried that think that might help. I don't think I've ever messed with the ror or rol options but I dunno. Thanks again for your help! ;D

You are right, ror would rotate all of them. I've tried it in .84 and I don't get his result. Not sure if it is a .82 problem or not.

Just to let anyone know who may read this later down the road. I fixed this problem by removing the artwork directory in the mame.ini file. In all actualality the artwork was bugging me anyway because I only have so much monitor real estate and the games were just too small.

Add it back in and turn off bezels.
-
What would that do? ??? What other artwork does mame use other than bezels? That's all I've ever seen it use. I never looked in the file that came with my romset I just threw the contents in the artwork folder.

Some games, like space invaders, use a background. Game may not look right without it.
-
Lots of games use an underlay. Most of them are vector games, a couple of rasters. Disc of Tron, Space Invaders, Asteroids Deluxe, That vector game with the knights. You need it for that last game otherwise you wouldn't know where the wall are.

How DO you remove artwork/bezels? I wanna play Commando without squinting myself into a migrane!

in you mame.ini file turn them off.
